An eminently watchable, enjoyable time. It is important that occasionally there be a movie that celebrates something good, and where all of the characters are likable and nothing bad happens. So that was this. Good people having good things happen to them, and doing something they (and we) love.
A masterpiece of dramatic tension, no, but every once in a while, a trip like this is fun.
I kept waiting for the "things going well, but then they go badly and the characters have to recover" story arc to take place, but it never really does. Everyone is well-meaning, and everything goes great, and a lot of good cooking takes place.
I appreciated that they took the cooking seriously. This ties Babette's Feast for best cooking movie, although those are the only two I am aware of.
Mikey got fat.
Three out of four stars, as a movie. Four out of four, as a love letter to food. One and a half out of four as a love letter to filmmaking.
