You Guys I Found The Most Uncomfortable Depressing Movie Of

Post by pinback »

All Time.

It is called "We Need To Talk About Kevin". It stars Tilda Swinton, or Swinson, or whatever her name is, who is uncomfortable and depressing to look at anyway, but in this movie she has the worst life humanly possible, and spends most of the movie glaring grimly into the camera because she has the worst life ever, and it just keeps getting worse and worse and more depressing, until the central tragedy of the movie occurs, and then it JUST GETS EVEN WORSE THAN THAT.

Oh my dear Lord Jesus on a pita, it is the absolute-- I mean, it has great artistry. It is by all accounts a "great movie."

I've just never seen a movie put together that is so UTTERLY, COMPLETELY DEVOID of any joy whatsoever. Even Schindler's List had its light moments.

This is all terrible and horrible from the moment the title card appears to the final credit roll.

You should watch it just to see how much you wish you had not watched it.

I understand that the movie is four hours long and in the middle two it's Tilda popping in and watching the movie "Gerry."

To tie this into Ben, I guess this is the kind of movie that, to quote Schuyler White in "Breaking Bad," that make you wish they'd get cancer and hurry up and die!

It has a 7.5 rating on imbd. That means it has to be a great movie.

(quote repeats 73,000 times)
A friend of mine said something which you might not be aware of, and applies to your comments:

"Do you realize you're further than ever from being funny? And you were never remotely close?

"Why do you think anything you say is funny? Because we still know you think you're funny, you never let us forget it. We keep telling you you're not, but instead of dialing it down, you seem to think that if you try HARDER, you'll finally be funny.

"And it just makes it worse.

"You can't. You can not, and will never be funny. Why can't you just understand that and hang out with us like a normal person? We like you just fine, just the way you are. You don't have to impress us with humor. You can't. It just makes everyone uncomfortable.

"EVERY TIME (100%) you think you have something funny to say, remember: IT ISN'T. DO NOT POST IT."

Once again, Tdarcos is funny, and not for the reason he thinks he is.

Pinback, have you seen "Happiness?" Not in an existential sense, I mean the film. How does "We Need to Talk about Kevin" compare on the depression scale?

Yeah, I seen that a while ago. I don't remember specifics (err, well, maybe a couple), but I'd say it's of a similar vibe, although "Kevin" has more of a razor-sharp focus on one incomprehensibly miserable person, rather than just a whole bunch of fucked up goofballs.

Watched this last week and besides the fact it was depressing / sad, the constant hint of a larger, more serious issue was quite well executed (plus it deftly avoided the usual sensationalism associated with these kinds of things). Guess I'm now off to rent Happiness and compare.

Has anybody seen Beautiful Boy? I believe it's about the same subject matter as Kevin but only dealing with the aftermath whereas Kevin seems to be more about the buildup. It's been on my DVR for ages. Should I watch it or delete it? I love a good depressing movie.

I couldn't find Beautiful Boy, but there is a semi-direct sequel in the same vein that I'll be checking out. In researching the movie, it also appears that the director is known for making depressing / dark comedies and I may explore his filmography because of it.
