Let's Solve This Shit: Arcade Edition

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

All right, Flack's down to four machines, Vark sold his pinball, Jizaboz hasn't taken possession of his game yet and Hodor hodor. This isn't the ideal crew we all wish it was, but it IS the crew we have. It IS the crew that is here. It IS the crew that is playing the game.

So I present you...

Let's Solve This Shit: Arcade Edition!

(Pretend that was in the Nintendo font.)

First up, ROM burners! Let's all find a ROM BURNER that will let us burn ARCADE ROMS once and for all! So we don't have to sponge off our buddies for this sort of thing.

Ideally it would be USB compatible. Ideally it would mouth my longer while it burned ROMs, but ideally it would be USB.

I'll come back to this thread in 24 hours with my (our) findings. I really feel that by solving the problem, we're going to all be a better gamer.

Oh. We can also be a better gamer by dating Felicia Day.

I will say that I saw one comment on an arcade forum where a guy said "It works great. For the older stuff I use..."

For the older stuff?!? What the? Like programming the stone tablets of Moses?

There's a guy on our local Oklahoma arcade forum that burns ROMs -- I'll ask him what he uses.

OH, I just remembered, 98Pacecar (Darren) burns his own ROMs, too. I'll ask him as well.

1 PM and 1 email sent. Let's see what this gets us.

98Pacecar says: It's been a while since I've looked, but the willem line used to be the go to models. I'd just recommend he figure out what types of games he will be working on and go from there. Some of the newer stuff (cps2 in particular) use some odd parts that can be a hassle. The willems seem to have adaptors for pretty much everything. Some older games use early EPROMs that are not supported on newer burners, so that can be a factor too.

Kevin Mullins says: I'm not familiar with that particular one. I use a cheap Williem burner. The biggest thing to look at is the list of chips it says it can do and make sure it has an external power supply, the USB "only" ones often don't have enough ass to do some of the older chips. Mine is an older version of this one: http://www.mcumall.com/comersus/store/c ... oduct=4219

But it really boils down to what kind of chips and such your friend will be getting into. [...] I do a very limited amount of burning and it's usually older/simpler game stuff.

---

Kevin also referred me to two other people -- I'll get their opinions as well.

Just talked to my brother, he said he can burn whatever roms you need. Can burn chip-to-chip or from a file. Just need to tell him the chip number and manufacturer. He said for older stuff it might be a little hard to come by the chips themselves but he doesn't think it'll be too big a deal.

I guess he burns chips all the time and is the resident go-to guy for stuff like that in his department at Harris RF. Huh, who knew.
