Top Six Guitarists

Post by AArdvark »

So as not to clutter the VH review thread.
remember, this is only through the range of music that I listen to, so there are probably many more out there that I have never heard of, just so ya know. Also , I'm trying to only base this on ability, not other stuff, like the overall influences the guitarists had on the genre (which is very hard to ignore in some instances)

one is good, six is not as good

6.] Jeff beck, Brian May

5.] Trey Anastasio, Jimmy Page

4.] John Lennon, Carlos Santana

3.] Slash, Les Paul

2.] Jimi Hendrix, Edddie VanHalen, Eric Clapton

1.] Mark Knopfler, Robert Fripp

Ok, this is a lot harder than it looks. I left out a bunch of others that should get mentioned. I feel like I slighted them somehow, or maybe I should swap them up a little, I dunno. I wonder if the frumpy old judges at teh Westminster Dog Show have this problem when they pick best of show every year.

I shall attempt to separate those I like versus those that I think are impressive. John Oates probably isn't going to be on a list like this though I enjoy the man's work. Neil Finn is probably the best musician I have ever heard, but that's more due to his songwriting and singing and just his guitar work.

Additionally, nobody in the field of pop punk music should be mentioned within five threads of this one. It involves more work, but I think we will enjoy the results.

Additionally to that, I heard so many Eric Clapton songs in the late 80s/early 90s that I may never actively seek one out again. But still, gotta show the man props. The Internet is going to end itself when he passes away.

So.

6. Jimmy Page
5. Eric Clapton
4. Alex Lifeson
3. Steve Howe
2. Eddie Van Halen
1. Robert Fripp

You know what, I've never heard a Jimi Hendrix song except the two they sometimes play on the radio. Maybe I shouldn't be in this thread. But fuck, some asshole for the Rolling Stone had EVH 70th and Robert Fripp at 42.

So my list is already better than his. Robert Fripp! 42! 42! The only guy who cares enough to sit down when he plays and somebody thinks they'd rather listen to Joe Perry and/or Jerry Garcia.

The top six guitarists are Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Brian May, David Gilmour, Alex Lifeson and Eddie Van Halen.

I thought this was obvious.

I was afraid that my love of Queen would put Brian May up there too far. Shit. Shit!

I am saddened that pinback hates progressive rock. Let me see if I can maybe find a King Crimson song that he likes? It is impossible to introduce pinner to anything, though.

Get this shit: my girl said the same about ME last night! Is that fair? Do I resist getting introduced to new things?

I dunno, It's too hard to regulate these guys to any ranking order. I guess they should all be in a best-of category and leave it at that.

I don't much care for Queen, and May is up there for me.

I despise the band Van Halen, but EVH is up there.

Was never a huge Pink Floyd guy, but Gilmour is undeniable.

Jimi Hendrix, if I never heard another song, I'd be okay with it. But you gotta give props.

Jesus, only two of the guys I picked I actually like their bands.

I like Slash
the last group complained, quite tellingly They said, "Why don't you have a spoon that just says 'Earth?' It would save time
