Bizarre Coheed and Cambria news story.
I doubt anyone here has ever listened to Coheed and Cambria, at least intentionally, but they're a metal band that's been around since 1995. They have 5 studio albums, all of which are sci-fi concept albums, at least one of which went gold. I wouldn't call them a top tier metal band, but they've opened for top tier metal bands. I think I saw them play when I saw Slipknot live. Right now they're on tour with Soundgarden ... which is what makes this story bizarre.
On the way to open for Soundgarden this past weekend, Michael Todd apparently robbed a Walgreens pharmacy by handing them a note written on his cell phone that said he had a bomb. Todd left the pharmacy with six bottles of Oxycontin and then hailed a cab to the venue and got ready for the show. Apparently someone saw him get into the cab and they cracked this case pretty quickly; Todd was arrested at the venue.
I guess the most surprising aspect of the entire store is that a member of a modern metal band can't get drugs without robbing a Walgreens pharmacy.

Meaning by now, they've rusted.Flack wrote:I doubt anyone here has ever listened to Coheed and Cambria, at least intentionally, but they're a metal band that's been around since 1995.
I would expect no less from a metal band.Flack wrote:They have 5 studio albums, all of which are sci-fi concept albums, at least one of which went gold.
As I said, they're the rust underlying other metal.Flack wrote:I wouldn't call them a top tier metal band, but they've opened for top tier metal bands.
(Note: 'Like I said' is incorrect grammar, and is one of my pet peeves.)
A rope walks into a bar, and the bartender tells him to get out, they don't serve his kind. So he walks out, rubs himself against the building, then twists himself over. He walks back into the bar, and the bartender says he told him to get out, they don't serve ropes.Flack wrote: I think I saw them play when I saw Slipknot live.
Rope: But I'm not a rope!
Bartender: You sure look like one.
Rope: You're incorrect.
Bartender: Well, what are you then?
Rope: I'm a frayed knot!
Given the general rise in expenses and fall in the typical standard of living, the future ain't what it used to be.

C&C is one of those bands that, based on other stuff I like (usually citing Rush specifically), everyone tells me I would love, and every time I listen to it, I... do not love.
EDIT: Listening to the youtube-linked song has not changed my opinion. Having a guy that can do a decent Geddy Lee impression DOES NOT MAKE YOU RUSH.

I think the most telling part is that the first video keeps asking me if I'm over 40 and single -- which, if you listen to C&C, you may be.
That band really took a turn for the worse. Their 80s stuff like "Everybody Dance Now" was terrific. That C&C, man, they were a music factory!

ICJ enjoys "pop-punk", arguably (and agreed by him to be) the worst form of music in the history of the planet. He has long since rescinded his right to determine what "rocks".
For those who are unaware of what rocks, enjoy any of the following:

And just to prove how C&C cannot lick Rush's white, hairy Canadian dick:

This is true. I enjoy songs with strong melodies. The kids who make these songs can't write anything complicated, and the people who can make complicated music can't write a tune you can whistle to save a life.pinback wrote:ICJ enjoys "pop-punk", arguably (and agreed by him to be) the worst form of music in the history of the planet. Ergo, while I listen to catchy music, it's awful. Virtually every Youtube video of "concert" footage from pop-punk bands makes you think they have never actually successfully performed the song before.

I actually don't mind pop-punk, assuming we are thinking of the same types of bands (Diana Ross, right?). My son recently went through an Avril Lavigne phase. I don't know who rights her songs but Jesus, those three chords are catchy.
I played my kid some Sex Pistols the other day and tried to explain to him that at one point in time they were the most radical band in all the land and he was like, ORLY. Stupid kids.
While not pop-punk, I always have the Dead Milkmen somewhere in the rotation.
I associate a lot of music with the people that introduced it to me. In middle school, all of my friends and I were into trading cassette tapes. The thing was, we were all metal heads, so even though we were into different bands, it was all still metal. I was like the Motley Crue and Metallica guy, Jeff was the Ozzy and Black Sabbath guy, Scott was the KISS and AC/DC guy, and so on. We were constanting signing up for Columbia House, getting our 13 tapes for a penny, and then making copies for one another.
Anyway, there was this one kid named Matt who wanted to start trading tapes with us. The very first tape he gave me had Dead Milkmen's "Big Lizard" on one side and Minor Threat's "Out of Step" on the flip side. Another friend of mine, Louis, gave me a copy of the Violent Femmes around that same time. Those were definitely a couple of tapes that broadened my horizons a bit.
