Post the Lineup to your next Mix CD
...or mix tape, for those of you who create cassettes.
OK, here's the next one I'm going to burn. Keep in mind that by using songs from two different decades, I totally get that there is absolutely no coherency to the disc and that ultimately I will grow irritated by the shifting styles and throw it out. The only mix discs that I make that I keep around are ones from either the same five year span, or same band.
Bad Religion -- The Drunk Sincerity
Marvelous 3 -- The Last Sleep
Sum 41 -- Still Waiting
Unwritten Law -- Up All Night
Incubus -- Stellar
SR71 -- Hello Hello
Splender -- The Lonliest Person I Know
Something Corporate -- Fall
Boston -- I Had A Good Time
Squeeze -- Tempted
Mister Mister -- Kyrie
No Doubt -- Underneath It All
Ministry -- Everyday is Halloween
Comments:
1) Up All Night, Hello Hello, and Fall are probably, really, "terrible" songs but I can't get them out of my goddamn head.
2) Ben is solely responsible for the No Doubt song being on this compilation, as it was his thread in this base that got me into that song. Why the hell there is a reggae singer at the end of this one is beyond me. That was like 90 extra seconds of Gwen there cooing into the microphone that we lost. The fuck?
3) I try to segue into the two 80s songs that are on the GTA: Vice City soundtrack by putting the new Boston single there, but I fail. Fail badly. What can I say, I didn't hear much of Tempted or Kyrie when they were new, and only gained a 21st Century Appreciation for them.
4) The Last Sleep will probably make my top ten single list if I ever had to write a top ten single list. I first heard this song only a couple months ago.
5) I end every mix CD with "Everyday is Halloween," and I suggest that you do, too.

They are wonderful. Imagine early Uncle Tupelo crossed with the Dead Milkmen.gsdgsd wrote:I think you're the first person I know that's responded to the name "Slobberbone" with anything other than disgust. That's cheering me up today, for whatever reason.
They're .... not for everyone. Very drunken country-rock. That particular song is more on the rock end of the spectrum.
You should also listen to more Robert Earl Keen. And if you like that sort of thing, Fred Eaglesmith.

I'll add Fred Eaglesmith to the "check out" list. Right now, the most-played CD is 16 Horsepower ... astounding band.

I like this song, and Tempted as well. Are all their songs like this? They sound like Crowded House, which is one of my favorite bands. Have I been missing out on a band that by all rights should be one of my all-time favorites, or are they like Blue Oyster Cult in so much that they did two (Burning for You and that Reaper song) and only two songs that I like?loafergirl wrote: Squeeze- Black Coffee in Bed
Time for me to use the Internet for good rather than evil and sort this out, I think.

I should probably mention that I wouldn't have made this mix if not for this thread. Here we go:
Interpol - Untitled
Nerf Herder - Mr. Blue Sky
XTC - Standing In For Joe
Faith No More - Take This Bottle
Astronaut Wife - Where Will We Go*
Belle & Sebastian - Seeing Other People
Teenage Fanclub - Take the Skinheads Bowling
Flesh Peddlers - Angie Girl
Freezepop - Tender Lies
Yatsura - Velvy Blood
Wax Mannequin - Dust Boy's New Machine
Honey Dogs - Rumor Has It
The Sadies - With A Splash
Joey Ramone - What a Wonderful World
Rancid - Old Friend
Box-o-Car - Only a Phase
NoahJohn - Sister's Recital
Undertones - It's Going to Happen
New Pornographers - Jackie
Goldfrapp - Sonar 2000
Dan Bryk - Because I'm Spoiled pts 1 & 2
* Not that I wouldn't have to defend some of the other choices, but this is the guiltiest pleasure. I can't truly explain how it has grown on me so.
Basically, this mix is a combination of new music I've been listening to (the Teenage Fanclub and Joey Ramone are 'bowling for columbine'-inspired), winter music, morale encouragement, and summer music.

"Last night I had a dream I licked your knees..."
hehehe
Actually one of my favorite Teenage Fanclub songs was done with De La Soul sampling Tom Petty on the Sountrack to Judgement night sing title "Fallin'". I have no idea why I like that song so much, it's just nifty... well the entire album is pretty nifty...

Heh, that line isn't in the Teenage Fanclub song I have, and I never noticed it (until after your message) in the original.
The Teenage Fanclub/De La Soul song on the Judgement Night soundtrack was my favorite, although at the time, my friends and I were pretty excited about the Faith No More track.

Okay, now I'm thinking of doing a "odd covers of 'tough guy' songs" compilation, just because I realized I know a number of songs in this category, and like all of them.
"Iron Man" as performed by the Cardigans
"Boyz in da Hood" as performed by Dynamite Hack
"Gin and Juice" as performed by Sissy Bar
"Hurt" as performed by Johnny Cash
"Lord of the Thighs" as performed by the Breeders
"Satisfaction" as performed by Cat Power
And, geeze, the well's already run dry. Nevermind, I guess.

Actually The Tori version of Smells Like Teen Spirit is amazing, however though I like her, she's had some really bad ones too.. Losing My Religion being one of the worst.bruce wrote:I rather like weird covers.Debaser wrote:Okay, now I'm thinking of doing a "odd covers of 'tough guy' songs" compilation, just because I realized I know a number of songs in this category, and like all of them.

I shudder to ask, but are you an RMTA regular? On account of, that's where my gaming group tends to hang out online. And I usually end up stuffing envelopes for Little Blue World issues. And stuff.loafergirl wrote:Actually The Tori version of Smells Like Teen Spirit is amazing, however though I like her, she's had some really bad ones too.. Losing My Religion being one of the worst.

Ok, so the (perhaps not overly healthy) CD I'm going to put together next -- good drinking songs. Not necessarily songs about boozing, though those of course qualify, but some great booze songs ("Alcohol" by Gang Green comes to mind) aren't good clasp-your-buddies-about-the-shoulders-and-drunkenly-sing-along songs.
Some of the stuff that'll get considered:
Just about anything from the Old 97s' first three albums
Robert Earl Keen's "Corpus Christi Bay" (though about 35 other REK songs would work as well)
Just about any Slobberbone song
Just about anything off AC/DC's "Back in Black"
the Circle Jerks' "Golden Shower of Hits"
Terry Allen's "Whatever Happened to Jesus (and Maybelline)"
Drivin' and Cryin's "Straight to Hell"
the Pogues' "If I Should Fall From Grace With God"
Uncle Tupelo's cover of "Blue Eyes"
But there's many more out there. Drinkers, give me suggestions. GO!
