Harry Potter 6 (not necessarily a review)

Post by AArdvark »

The biggest complaints I have heard about this movie, and I have heard them from a number of people, fall into two categories.

1] Things happened in the book that did not happen in the movie

2] Things happened in the movie that did not happen in the book.

I believe that most people have read the book so I won't give any kind of plot summary or anything. What happens is that the constant readers have made a movie in their minds and then when they go see the motion picture it is not the way they imagined it. Then they get mad and disappointed.

I went in with an open mind and really enjoyed it. I knew they weren't gonna be able to stick every line of dialog or every subplot in the book. Three hours was enough to make a good movie and keep the audience entertained.
there were two small touches that really brought the movie home. (again, this is my opinion)

The moment when Ron and Harry open Slughorn's cupboard and see there are only two copies of the textbook they want. One is badly damaged and one is almost new. They immediately start a wrestling match to gain possession of the new copy. It's the sort of thing any 15 or 16 year old pair of friends would do. My nephews do that sort of thing all the time. It makes the movie characters lot more human, something we don't see very often because they are always fighting dragons and bad wizards and suchlike.

There was a lot of dislike about the amount of teenage hormones flying about. Everyone seemed to be smooching or unhappy in love. Well that's what happens to teenagers and it's good that they left it in. Sure there could have been a lot more wizarding and magic and stuff, but I like to think this is a movie about teenagers (difficult enough when the three main characters are almost 20) and these are the things teenagers do, even if they can fly on brooms and shoot spells at each other. I remember the uproar when #3 came out and they were dressed in normal clothes for most of the movie. I like it that the director and screenwriter decided to focus on the people and not just what they could accomplish.

As for stuff not in the book, well how boring would that have been if everything was totally predictable. Sure there are going to be some plot holes that will need to be filled by the time movies 7 and 8 come out. Most of them will be covered by a couple lines of dialog and that's that.
I didn't go there and spend my six bucks (early show, no kids) to say 'Hey! what happened to XXXXX! That's not how the book went!' I went to have an enjoyable three hours and eat some popcorn.

Oh yeah, saw the trailer for 'Where The Wild Thins Are'

There are some childrens' books that should just be left alone.

I guess maybe they could start a Newbery medal winner movie saga. Something to rival the James Bond series!

Next out: 'Make Way For Ducklings!' In 3-D!!
'Frog and Toad Together!
or how about 'Holes'....Oh wait...my bad.

Know what, folks? I stand corrected. I just now went and looked up all the newbery medal winners and there's a whole boatload of them already made into movies. So i will shet my mouf.
