[MINI-REVIEW] Cube

Post by pinbacker »

This movie, made in 1997, features six people waking up in a square room, which leads to other square rooms, which leads to other square rooms, some of which are booby-trapped to kill you as soon as you go into them.

Whereas SAW was a movie with a pretty good concept, which was done just barely well enough to make it enjoyable, CUBE is a movie with a GREAT concept, which was done almost poorly enough to make it unenjoyable. However, since it never quite crosses that line (until the very end), it's a valuable 90 minute watch for any sci-fi/horror/suspense fan.

Also notable is how well the movie would translate into at least part of a text adventure, as they hunt around for objects and try to figure ways of using them to get past the "puzzles" which their environment throws at them.

This could be remade into a really outstanding movie. As it is, it's a movie with a great idea, and well made for its tiny budget, with just horrendous acting and writing. I mean, really really really bad. And a bad ending.

But just good enough.

That's the wrong video, by the way.

It's not Asian is it? I'm certain it will get ripped off soon then.

People have said that Saw 2 (the script of which was apparently not originally a Saw movie, but something else shoe-horned into the franchise) wanted to "be" Cube.

I saw Cube!

The motiviations of the cop were shittily done. Also, so the numbers were something that the autistic guy could figure out, but they got quite a ways into it with the girl figuring out her version of problem. Was that just a coincidence? If so, then what was her skillset in all of this?

Cube 2 was the same, and still watchable. I actually saw that one first.

I thought that Saw III needed to be a text adventure. More puzzles, less stupid plot. It angered me that it panned past rooms with more contraptions in them, but the people just started melting down and killing each other before those puzzles were even explored.
