Ubuntu requirements

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

OK, they sent me a disc. They are awesome. These Ubuntu people.

It says it needs 256 MB of RAM and 2 GB of disk space. What about processor speed? I have an old Celeron 450 handy - would it run OK on that? With gobs of RAM added to it.

GNOME (Ubuntu's default desktop environment) requires very little processor overhead. Your Celeron 450 should be fine.

Be warned that it is a bitch and a half to get Ubuntu working with proprietary software. As a matter of principle, Ubuntu includes only software libre, which means that Flash and MP3 encoders and stuff like that is not included. Good luck.

Install the VideoLanClient (VLC) by typing:
sudo apt-get install vlc

VLC has many integrated codecs, such as MP3, DivX, Xvid, Ogg Vorbis and MPEG.

wget -c http://www.debian-multimedia.org/pool/m ... 0_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i w32codecs_20061022-0.0_i386.deb

Hahahahahahahahahahaha......

Fucken.... HAHAHAHAHAHA

Load that fucker full of ram before ya push it off though. Gnome sucks at 256 megs or under, and a gig is suggested.

Jonsey; why ask when its twenty minutes to install?

Damn it to HELL this BBS ate my post thanking hygraed twice. God CHRISTING Fist.

...

Anyway, thank you very much. I would really only use it for checking out how the Hugo games look on Linux, but I have heard so many good things I can't help but take a look and see what the deal is. Thanks for the heads-up. Usually there is a spare PC around here in much better shape than the Celeron, but not currently. The Celeron just keeps ticking and ticking.

Yeah, I'd replace Gnome with something like fvwm2 right quick-like if I were you. Assuming you're installing, not just running from the CD.

You could also get one of the free flavors of VMware, and install a Linux virtual machine there. I'm in the process of downloading the Solaris 10 DVD to try that on Parallels (VMware-ish thing for Mac), which I can run along with Debian and XP, which I already have running in Parallels. After that, probably Windowses 95, 98, and NT 4.0, OS/2 Warp and ECS 1.1, BeOS, maybe Plan 9, and something like maybe IBM PC DOS 7.0 and Windows For Workgroups 3.11. Just because I, y'know, can.
