Hockey Season Has Started!

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

Philadelphia Flyers GM Bobby Clarke resigns and fires coach Ken Hitchcock right before doing so. Whoa!

So when we talked today, I had no idea of all this -- so your allusion to it was lost on me. Whoa!

Clarke was long overdue. He's never really accepted that you need a functioning goalie and speedy defensemen to keep pace in the league. He's one of those guys that's really good at creating a consistent second-tier team.

Hitchcock though? Dump the players (Esche? Hatcher? SUCK) first.

Leafs. When it's a proper noun, normal grammatical pluralization rules do not apply.

Bugs is the only reasonable Leafs fan I have ever met in my entire life.

Who turned off editing?

ADDITION: You have not lived until the Leafs have defeated your team in the playoffs. There are some obnoxious professional franchises in victory -- the Chicago White Sox announcers, the reporters for the St. Louis Rams (seriously, you can not read their stuff the day after the Rams win and not want to punch every one of them in the face) but Usenet + Leafs fanbase + the Leafs winning a series is the most beautifully horrible thing you'll ever see.

You can almost say it's worth it for when they inevitably get knocked out themselves. Reckoning like that you just don't see in every day life. It makes the average three-page thread on here seem like schoolchildren learning how to share on the Romper Room.

Your boy Recchi and the Penguins beat us fair and square tonight.
Don't tell anyone, but right from the start I was rooting for Pittsburgh. I cheered when they tied it up. Mark Recchi is always fun to watch and he has to be retiring soon.. and Buffalo has been getting too comfortable in their leading the league. They have tons of great players, and the best coach. One of the best goalies.. but Miller can't do it by himself. The goalie can't score and can't do shit if the defense doesn't do their job. The sabres simply need to put in the work if they're serious about taking the Cup this year.
Toronto Maple leafs tomorrow - better step it up. Toronto doesn't mess around. 3 losses in a row for the first time this season?

I've never seen Recchi play live, which is a horrible error on my part. You're right: this has got to be his last year. Because of the way the hall of fame works for hockey I would imagine that he would be a hall of famer, but you never really hear him described that way. Certainly when he retires it's not going to capture the evening's broadcast on SportsCenter, but maybe it's different in Canada.

Every once in a while I see something like the Sabres putting up six goals in one period. Also, it was funny to see Ruff get Hitchcock fired because his team dropped like 14 goals on the Flyers, when Hitchcock was the guy coaching the Stars whe "NO GOAL" happened. (If Hitchcock had any sort of honor about him he brings his guys to the bench until they review that. I'm not a big Sabres fan and they still had to win both that game and the next one, but that was a sham.)

The Flyers traded Peter Forsberg (technically again). They got even less for him this time.

Man, it's like that lockout never ended.

Also, I can put "Becky Nailed Recchi" by Beaver on the Internet if some of you want. It's technically there already, I mean I can link to it. It's a horrible song, but at least it gets you in on a couple more in-jokes.
