Got Sirius?

Post by chris »

As of this past Tuesday, I am officially a subscriber to Sirius satellite radio.

Aside from the fact that I *hate* terrestrial radio and it's 30 minutes of commercials every hour, I wanted to be ready for when Howard Stern makes his move to satellite. Also, comedian Jim Breuer (from SNL...he did the Joe Pesci show) has a show on Sirius, and it's fucking hilarious. Oh yeah, and there are 60 channels of commercial-free tunes and another 60 channels of everything under the sun.

I picked up one of those small ~$100 recievers, the kind that can be used with either a home kit, car kit, or stuck in a boombox. It's about the size of small Walkman:

There's a small antenna (a bit bigger than a small cellular flip phone) that you have to point towards a satellite, but fortunately we apparently have a terrestrial repeater around here....I just stuck it in the window on my front porch, and got 100% signal strength from the repeater:

Activation is pretty slick. You set up your radio, tune it to a specific channel, and create your account on their website. Every radio comes with a unique ID code, which you enter while signing up. Once complete, their system sends a signal to your radio via the satellite, and it comes alive.

One neat feature these radios have is a song alert. If you hear a tune you like, you just hit a button on the radio, and it remembers it. The next time the song is played on ANY station, it alerts you to the fact. You can also see what's playing on all of the other stations while still listening to one specific station. The radio we bought also has an FM transmitter built-in, so you can tune in Sirius on any FM radio in the house. The transmitter is fully programmable...you can set it to any frequency on the FM dial.

And as a Sirius subscriber, I can login to their website and listen to any of the music channels....they stream them all over the 'Net.

Overall, this thing fucking rocks. At $11.87/month (when you pick the 1-year plan), it's worth every penny.

Paying for radio? How asinine. It's just one more way to fork over $10-20/month to the Man for something you OMG need!

It's on par with On*Star and that stupid bitch from the commercial who locks both her keys and her 2-year-old in the car. Great, so we've prevented some much needed herd-thinning, and for only $16/month!

Plus, this is coming from a guy who admittedly hates all music produced since 1986.

You motherfucker.

I'm with bugs on this. I think everyone is just better off with an MP3 player. Unless the channels really alert you to some great new tunes, I think I'll be quite happy with oink.me.uk.
Good point Bobby!

Howard Stern.

(And O&A. And all these other shows peeps are talkin' about.)

It's not for music, it's for the content

I enjoy the occasional hit of Stern or Don and Mike or Jim Rome as much as anyone. But I ain't paying $15/month for it.

Though I freely admit, I have subscribed in the past to Jim Rome's streamlink service (approx. $10 for six months) to listen at my desk at work because I'm inside a concrete building that gets zero radio reception.

I can't fathom why dunderheaded shawk jawks are worth $15/month to anybody with the intelligence to turn on a computer.

Yeah, I too am assuming it's pretty easy to download popular radio shows like Howard Stern's. I've got no idea where to download them from though.

If I were to get satellite radio - it would be for one reason:

But - I download it from Usenet for free onto my MP3 player... so no need to pay for XM... and I can pause, rewind, fast-forward through the show to my liking.

They aren't, but time dies pretty slowly when you are commuting up to 3.5 hours a day. It's, what 60 miles from Rochester to Buffalo? That's my commute.

Yup - and who wants to listen to nothing but commericals, news breaks, the same song over and over again, etc...

O&A definitely makes the 2 hour each-way drive to Hornell and back every other weekend much more enjoyable while the young one watches a DVD in the back.

Forgive me for replying so late....been away on vacation this past week.

We got Sirius for a couple of reasons:

1) I can't stand commercials/advertising, and Sirius has 60 channels of commercial-free music (which is also streamed over the Internet for subscribers stuck in front of a computer). They have every kind of music under the sun, and there are a number of stations that satiate my preference for older music.

2) Comedian Jim Breuer has a 2-hour daily show on "Raw Dog" (the uncensored comedy channel). It's fucking hilarious.

3) Howard Stern will be on Sirius come January.

I know full well that Stern can currently be downloaded (commercial-free, heh) off of the newsgroups....I do it every day so I can listen at work. I currently record Breuer's show so I can take it with me on my iPod, and fully intend to do the same for Stern.

$11/month isn't much at all to pay for something we get an awful lot of use out of. We watch a lot less TV now, turning on Sirius instead of the TV when we're doing other things and just want some background noise. I can also tune in the satellite receiver on any FM radio in the house, so I can move around and do other things without missing anything. All in all, a worthwhile investment.
