Ray & Open Water

Post by pinback »

Ray (***1/2): Real good. Great music. A little overwrought. Foxx deserving of award.

Open Water (***1/2): Masterpiece of minimalism. Inspiration to any wannabe filmmaker with a DV recorder and a dream. (And a shark wrangler.) Could have done without the obligatory "well, this whole thing is YOUR FAULT!!!" scene. Could have also done without the gratuitous nudity, but she was fairly hot, so we'll deal with it.
When you need my help because I'm ruining everything, don't look at me.

Man, I'd like to catch these movies, but Netflix is throttling me down to like one movie a month at this point.

What a load of horseshit. In a way I feel I'm experiencing the magic of the movie "Ray" right now because with Netflix I CAN'T SEE SHIT.

Why the limit all of a sudden? Demand outstripping supply?

What I read indicates that Netflix "loses money" if you rent more than x number of movies in a month. Not sure what the value of x is. Definitely 30... but we were renting far less than that. 15 a month, maybe?

Netflix still wants to advertise unlimited rentals. Which is horseshit. They pretend to not get your movies to slow you down. The last thing that occurs to them is to be honest about it, of course.

Anyway, I doubt they'll be around in five years. Blockbuster has the ability to not throttle downloads. I predict that they will ape Netflix's business model minus the annoyances and then crush them and then make their own subscription service 100x worse than Netflix's.

Netflix and Blockbuster will be history in the next 5 years video-on-demand through the cable company slowly takes over.
