They charged me $25 for a guy to come to the house and check that the line for the cable modem was active -- oh -- sorry, they charged me $25 for "installation."

"Installation." Yeah, that's why I had to go through the entire goddamn setup myself, call them up when the registration failed because they had my old NICs under my Fort Collins account and then get everything on my side working myself, systems and router all included.

I didn't do anything special. An ape and a monkey can get three computers and a router going. I'd have been offended if they did all that and charged me. But Jesus Christ -- $25 for, literally, a guy to check that what came from the wall worked. I didn't think I was getting charged because, honestly, who could fucking charge for that?

How much are you guys paying for broadband? Since I have Directv and not cable through them, they tack on an extra $10 a month. Since I "rent" the cable modem and haven't bought one, they want another $10 a month. So I'm at $56 a month for their shitty service. I'm genuinely interested in what y'all are paying and if DSL is cheaper.

It comes to $55 or so for RR and the voice over IP phone line (with incoming number) and taxes and all. And the modem is rented...

Regular RR is $40, maybe $45 for new custies now.

I'm convinced Comcast is defined as "Bend Over" in their employee handbook.

I'm addicted to the speed/ease (when it's working) or it would be DSL for me.

I started paying $27/mo 2 years ago. It's up to $42. I got rid of cable last month (now have Directv) and they wanted to charge me $59/mo. The $42 is my discount price because I had cable. I asked what was their cheapest cable package -- 7 bucks.

I asked if I got my $17 discount if I went with that plan... Yup. Of course, the fucking weasel didn't offer me that in the first place.

I actually lost it when he told me they had to come to the house to put a "governor's cap" on my cable line so I would only get channel 2-12 (the $7 option). It would cost me $15 bucks for that and they couldn't pick up my discarded cable boxes at that time -- I had to bring them to the nearest office.

"It's not his job" was the only thing he kept saying.

Fuck you. After escalating it a bit, the prick picked up my cable boxes.

Damn Jonsey, you hit a nerve....

I pay $65 for DSL from SBC.

But that $65 gets me five static addresses...really, a /29 netblock with a network address, a broadcast address, a router address, and five left over for me.

They allow me to run mail or news servers or whatever back in there.

I'm pretty pleased with it. Plus, when I called to order it, the lady on the other end of the phone actually told me how to do it so that I ended up here for the cheapest possible amount, which was to take advantage of their promo price on standard DSL with self-installation, and then, as soon as it was turned up, call back and say that I wanted the premium package. That let me save the $100 installation fee, which isn't waived for the premium package.

Their ISDN division is a bunch of pigfuckers, though.

$25 for a human being to come to the house is actually fairly cheap.

Locally, when we move, Road Runner charges something like $20 or so, and that includes running extra lines, etc. Frontier charges more like $35 and they just flip a switch. (Well, to be fair, there was a little more involved this time, since it was a new house. But not much.) (Oh, and don't get me started on how long it look to get the line buried, or how the first failed attempt yanked the wires off the house, which I reattached myself.)

Still pretty happy with Road Runner. Would like uncapped speed again, but I don't think anywhere gives you then. As I use DirecTV for television, I pay only $39.95 (no tax, etc) for RR. I've heard that satellite broadband sucks enormous quantities of ass, and you need special software to connect, to align the dish and all that crap. So, it might not work with FreeBSD, which would mean that I'd never even consider it.

The only thing they block is you running your own mail server... and it's been years since I checked, so who knows, maybe you can now. They do it to keep Joe Dickhead from accidentally running a server and someone using it to relay spam. It's possible that I could get it unblocked if I asked.
