1) One guy said that he flew 40 missions for his country, and that he was shot down on one occasion. John Glenn was his co-pilot. OK. Wait, what? Somebody SHOT DOWN a plane that consisted of Williams and Glenn? Williams probably had the best eyesight of anybody in his generation, and Glenn had enough composure to, well, get chucked into space whenever possible. Why didn't the Red Sox find the guy who beat those two guys and give *that* guy a try-out? History has failed us here, I think.
2) Anyone who has ever owned or been the GM for the Red Sox ought to be fricken ashamed of themselves that they couldn't get around to getting a world championship while Williams walked the earth. Toronto, Arizona, Florida and probably a few more other teams that I can't place managed to go from not existing when Williams started playing to grabbing a ring, so it's pretty inexcusable that such a streak of failure has managed to go on for so long.
Also, the term "The greatest hitter who ever lived" should be modified to be "the greatest non-racist hitter who ever played with non-sharpened spikes and who never went into the stands and beat a quadruped with his own wheelchair." That Tiger Fan has allowed the former statement to be continually uttered without bringing up Ty Cobb as an example shows you just how far that franchise has fallen. They don't even care any more.
