Better Off Dead

Post by Flack »

Mason and I were home alone last night when he asked to watch "a funny movie," so I started browsing through the online server and came to Better Off Dead. That is what we watched.

Funny how I don't remember the movie being this old, but it came out in 1985. That means I was 12 when I first saw it, and Mason is 12 now.

As far as goofy 80s comedies go, it stands up fairly well. The parts that were funny then are funny now. Mason laughed at the paper kid wanting two dollars and at the other gags. I am not sure if he got all of the drug references and I can't imagine a teen comedy today having a character snort snow and Jell-O and rubbing it on his gums. I did get a kick out of seeing Lane's '67 Camaro again. When I first saw this movie that car was 18 years old, which would be like a '96 Camaro to my kid today. Today that car is 47 years old -- which would be like Lane driving off in a '38 roadster or something. Just a random thought.

I've read multiple times that John Cusack hated this movie so badly that he quit speaking to the director at the premier and still won't talk about it to this day. Which is weird, as so many of us saw ourselves as Lane Meyer, hoping to "win the competition" against the school bully and have the girl of our dreams waiting for us at the finish line.

My brother went to see it with his friends. He came home and said: "You HAVE to see this movie. There's a part in this movie that you HAVE GOT to see!"

When I finally went to see it I found out that he was right...

That was weird. Before Youtube showed the movie clip, it ran an ad for Verizon FIOS. En Espańol.

A bit off topic, but what is your current file / online server set up? (Is it a straight file server with a separate front end? What is the hardware setup?) To make up for derailing the topic, I'll watch the movie tonight or tomorrow and post with my thoughts.

Sure.

Movies are stored on a RAID5 container connected to a Windows 2003 server. On that server I run Twonky Media Server, which is a UPnP server. I ran a cracked copy of Twonky for a while and it worked so good I bought it. It's $20.

In the back living room I have a Boxee Box. It was $199 and streams from the server. It does HDMI out and supports wireless and has USB inputs.

In the front living room I have a Western Digital WD TV. I got it on closeout for $99. It is essentially the same as the Boxee Box.

Upstairs, I have a PS3. The PS3 comes with an internal 802.11g wireless card. Because of where it sits, it's impossible to run a cable to. It often stutters when streaming from the server.

On my iPad I run Airplay. It finds the UPnP server and streams movies from the server. If I am on one of my computers, I forgo the UPnP stuff and just connect to the drive share and watch movies that way.

Instead of small dedicated boxes I used to stream to PCs hook to my televisions. The problem with that was that they had hard drives that were always running and fans and getting updates and rebooting, etc. I could have fixed some of those problems with SSD drives and silent fans but it was cheaper to just replace them with dedicated boxes.

Better Off Dead was one of the best Cusak movies evaar. One crazy Summer was a win too...
Our children have been subjected to the Back From The Future trilogy, it went over well... but we still don't have self drying jackets or hover boards. =(
