Royals by Lorde

Post by loafergirl »

Anyone else hooked on this song? This was one of those "must haves" that i listened to repeatedly for a while. Seems to be in the same vein as a lot of the complaints about the CRAP that is on TV/societal WTFs.

Many, many years ago I was doing donuts in a rental car in the middle of a winter blizzard in Minneapolis when a song came on the radio. The DJ introduced the song as a new song from a new band. After only a few seconds I grabbed my camcorder from the front seat (I was filming myself doing donuts in the rental car -- I was Jackass before there was Jackass) and pointed it at the car's stereo to record the song. I had never heard anything like it and I knew -- KNEW -- that this song and band were going to be huge. The song was "I'm Just a Girl" by No Doubt, and I was right. They turned out to be huge.

I got the same feeling I heard this "Royals" song. I didn't grab my camcorder because I no longer have one (today, we have iPhones...) but I did end up downloading the song and sticking it in my mp3 rotation. I don't know know if Lorde will become as big as No Doubt did. The music industry is a lot different now than it was 20 years ago. If this song came out back then, no doubt (and no pun intended), Lorde would become huge. In today's single-heavy and disposable-artist world I don't know if she'll have any longevity, but I hope she does. I love the song's harmonies and Lorde's voice.

I don't think I've done donuts in the snow since I was learning to drive...
Yes, I do recall having a similar moment of WHOA with Green Day on late night MTV, and some other bands way back when.
Recently there have only been a few winners. As bands go Mumford and Son's and Fun are nice shining stars among a pile of rubbish.
I did check out a couple other Lorde songs on You Tube and wasn't overly impressed.

Anyone else feel like we got the old bait and switch?

No. We all knew she was from New Zealand and we all knew people from New Zealand all look like Lord of the Rings creatures.
