I Survived BTK

I Survived BTK is a documentary that tells the story of Charles Ortiz. Charles was a little boy in 1974 when he came home from grade school to find his family had been slaughtered by the serial killer known as BTK (Bind, Torture, Kill).

The film begins as Ortiz is about to get out of jail after having been involved in a domestic with his old lady. Shortly after he gets out of jail and begins to turn his life around, the BTK killer (Dennis Rader) is arrested for the BTK murders.

95% of this film is about Ortiz, his life, and how the murders affected him and changed his life. The final 5% covers the brief court trial in which Rader confesses to being BTK. During this segment viewers are treated to the crime scene photos, so if you've been wondering where you can get pictures of an 11 year old girl hanging from a noose with a gag in her mouth and her pants pulled down, this one's for you.

Although the movie ends on (I guess) an up note, it is impossible to watch this and not ponder how one random act of violence has the ability to affect a family for multiple generations.

Checked out Truman Capote's In Cold Blood? The entire Clutter Family was murdered except, I believe, for one member that wasn't there who ended up collecting on their insurance. I remember that they had just taken out a larger life insurance policy and while the company could have decided not to pay it since it was within the period they could contest it, the company chose not to do so.

Horrible crimes are horrible crimes and everyone faces them differently. One woman on a TV show gave a gut-wrenching description how she figured she'd be going to hell because she was the victim of a crime and would never be able to forgive the guy who did it.

They ran to Mexico, came back to the U.S., were caught, tried and convicted, and both were hanged in Kansas' gallows. (That much I did off the top of my head from reading the book and watching the movie maybe 20 years ago.) Wikipedia says that their execution was after 5 years of appeals (which is about average in death penalty cases) in 1965.

I just remembered something. Ironically, one of the guys in the movie who played one of the two murderers was Robert Blake!

BTK is the worst serial killer name ever. I can't be scared of a guy who sounds like a Burger King sandwich.
