Guns N' Roses
Went to go see Guns N' Roses last night. I was expecting a terrible, horrible show based on all the things I've read and videos I've seen.
I'd say it was one of the best concerts I've seen in a long, long time. Obviously you have to subtract some points for no original members of the band remaining except Axl, but as far as musically and visually, it was an awesome show.

My theory is that nobody actually likes GnR non-nostalgically. Like... you hear Welcome to the Jungle and it takes you back to a fun, special time in your life, so you like the song.
Let's test my theory:
PLEASE POST IN THIS THREAD IF YOU CAN HONESTLY SAY YOU ENJOY GNR'S MUSIC IN A NON-NOSTALGIC FASHION, AND THAT IT DOESN'T INSTANTLY MAKE YOU LUNGE FOR YOUR RADIO'S OFF SWITCH THE MICROSECOND YOU HEAR SLASH PLAY THE FIRST NOTE OF ANY OF THOSE GODAWFUL MUSICAL ABORTIONS.

When you need my help because I'm ruining everything, don't look at me.

No one can argue that Sweet Child O' Mine and Paradise City aren't horribly overplayed radio tunes. Welcome to the Jungle is a decent song that also suffers from over exposure. So if your poll is to determine who feels nostalgic when hearing overplayed radio songs, I'm sure you'll hit your mark.
Trust me, I am not defending the current GnR line-up. Before going to the show last night I kept telling people that it's not even GNR anymore; it's a GNR coverband, with Axl Rose singing. I get it. The thing is, I saw GNR perform live back in '92, and the GNR (or whatever you want to call them) I saw perform last night sounded tighter and closer to the album material than the version I saw two decades ago.

They probably like it about as much as they like root canal surgery, performed without anesthesia.pinback wrote:My theory is that nobody actually likes GnR non-nostalgically.
Yeah, those times I considered committing suicide, yeah, those were fun times. NOT.Like... you hear Welcome to the Jungle and it takes you back to a fun, special time in your life, so you like the song.
But are you pro-life or pro-choice, should those musical abortions have been prevented through proper musical contraception, or if someone wants to have a musical abortion it should be allowed? If, instead of a musical abortion, should we encourage musical adoption?PLEASE POST IN THIS THREAD IF YOU CAN HONESTLY SAY YOU ENJOY GNR'S MUSIC IN A NON-NOSTALGIC FASHION, AND THAT IT DOESN'T INSTANTLY MAKE YOU LUNGE FOR YOUR RADIO'S OFF SWITCH THE MICROSECOND YOU HEAR SLASH PLAY THE FIRST NOTE OF ANY OF THOSE GODAWFUL MUSICAL ABORTIONS.
Given the general rise in expenses and fall in the typical standard of living, the future ain't what it used to be.

He's off the drugs (except the normal stuff, like coke) and on the O2. When I saw G&R back in (I just looked it up) April of 1992, Axl was doing good to get every third word out. "Welcome to the jungle, we've got fun and games" came out like "Welcome ... jungle ... we've got ... games ...". This time, every song was spot on. All three guitarists, the bassist, and Dizzy (keyboards) had a solo/instrumental song, and each time you can bet Axl was behind the speaker stacks, sucking down pure oxygen. Each time he ran across the stage my friend and I were yelling "Axl! Slow down! You'll get winded!", but it seemed like he was in better shape now (at 49 years old) than he was back in '92.AArdvark wrote:That is a great setlist! Better than just three hours of straight GNR. Glad they had enough humility to mix it up and play a variety of different stuff.
I wonder if Axl is off the smack, now that he's touring again.
According to my old ticket stub, back in 1992 tickets were $20. This time around, they were $75.

One of my good friends, me, and our wives are in Vegas for my friend's 40th birthday. Tonight we have tickets to see Guns and Roses at the Hard Rock. Izzy will be joining them. We also have backstage meet and greet passes. We crammed a shit-ton of sightseeing and drinking into a 48 hour trip. Pix and stories when I get home tomorrow evening.

Here are two of the three videos I shot on my phone during the show.
You Could Be Mine (Full Song)

Paradise City / Grand Finale

I only shot a couple of videos, unlike the people in front of us who literally recorded every minute of the show on their phones. They didn't even watch the show, they just watched their phones.
