[ITTY-BITTY REVIEW] 127 Hours

2010 will go down as the Year Of Really Great Movies About Incredibly Boring Topics.

First you have The Social Network, a spellbinding tale about legal disputes over a website.

And now you have 127 Hours, a fucking fantastic movie about a guy stuck to a rock for some unknown length of time. But from start to finish, there is just a tremendous amount of energy and really beautiful filmmaking, which make the long journey to That Scene one definitely worth savoring.

And then there's That Scene, which features the most inspired use of sound in a movie that I can remember. The visuals are gory enough to incite a wince or two, but That Sound is why you'll remember That Scene.

Anyway, Franco is excellent, and he had to be, because that's the only way I'd ever forgive him for that disastrous Oscars performance. The cinematography is stunning. Danny Boyle is in top form. Sunshine is my favorite movie of his, but this is the best movie he's made yet.

PS, it also features what has to be the longest time between the start of the movie and the title card (except for movies that show the title card at the end). It's definitely in the running. Leaving Las Vegas might have been longer, but I don't know. Maybe not.

How long was it?

I think the Charles Bronson movie "The Mechanic" is one of the (non-silent) movies with the longest period from the beginning of the film where there is no dialog at all: 16 minutes. I think you have to go back to 2001 before that to get anything close to that (20 minutes).

It was at least 16.5 minutes from first frame to title card, and just one of the best uses of that technique in recent memory.

Man, was that good. (Yes.) That was rhetorical. (Oh.)
