I picked first overall in the Alliance of Evil league (motto: "we finish our draft by the start of the season or your money back") and... it didn't work so well for me. I don't have a really great record with first-round picks (cough Matt Hasselbeck cough) so having the number one pick more or less ensured I couldn't screw it up. Unfortunately, I think I botched much of the rest of the draft.
Let's take a look:
#1 -- Adrian Peterson, RB, Minnesota. Yeah, good. It's either All-Day or Chris Johnson first overall, and Johnson's going to be a human wreck by week seven, so this was the safe pick. A friend of mine looked at my draft and said "oh, you must have picked second, right?" but I still think this is the right choice.
#2 -- Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona. You can almost see the wheels coming off. This is a classic "three of the last four picks were WRs" pick. On one hand, possibly the best wide receiver in football. On the other, Matt Leinart.
#3 -- Philip Rivers, QB, San Diego. I'm at a loss to explain this. Tom Brady and Matt Schaub were still available. There are few players I hate more than Philip Rivers. His best receiver is suspended and probably leaving the team. Kindly make me feel good about this one, Philly!
#4 -- Anquan Boldin, WR, Baltimore. I think I thought he and Fitz were a good combo in Arizona, so therefore they will be on my fantasy team. Or I bought into this year's version of the "Baltimore will air it out this season" myth. Either way, not so great.
#5 -- Jahvid Best, RB, Detroit. And then I said "and Detroit's offense is also going to be awesome!" I don't think Jahvid Best even exists.
#6 -- Tim Hightower, RB, Arizona. If you've got one Arizona offensive player, why not get them all?
#7 -- Jermichael Finley, TE, Green Bay. A solid choice here. Of course, I thought that about Vernon Davis two years ago. I don't think I've ever got a touchdown from a tight end in the AOE league.
#8 -- Robert Meachem, WR, New Orleans. A good #3 WR, and this gives Robb and I the chance to make lots of literacy jokes in the next few months.
#9 -- Justin Forsett, RB, Seattle. I have had absolutely awful luck picking Seahawks over the years -- I don't think they've scored a touchdown since they were in the Super Bowl. Look for Forsett to be in the CFL by November.
#10 -- Ryan Longwell, K, Minnesota. A kicker may have been my second-best pick.
#11 -- Jared Allen, Defense, Minnesota. Here's a secret: Brett Favre has made me hate the Vikings, and I want them to fail. To make sure I'm tormented, I've countered that by making my fantasy team half Vikings. Allen should be solid.
#12 -- Matt Cassel, QB, Kansas City. "This is the season KC's offense explodes!!!" See Best and Boldin picks.
#13 -- Julius Peppers, Defense, Chicago. Should be solid.
#14 -- Santana Moss, WR, Washington. Not a bad pick at this point; decent upside if he connects with McNabb and if not, well, I picked him in the 14th round.
#15 -- Fred Jackson, RB, Buffalo. Injured to start the season but down the line this may be a steal. Or not. He's a first-string running back, but he also plays for Buffalo.
#16 -- Trent Cole, Defense, Philadelphia. Looks good! I sorta freaked out here because I realized I'd only filled two defensive slots and thought all three were done.
#17 -- Correll Buckhalter, RB, Denver. I needed to get either a Buc or Bronco. If he's healthy, and Knowshon Moreno stays out, he could easily score three touchdowns this season.
#18 -- Mario Williams, Defense, Houston. It's hard to avoid picking a good defensive player. All of mine will probably be on the disabled list by week two.

Well, we clearly need two more people. I have extended an offer to Mike Sousa next year, and I'd be willing to make the same offer to anyone else reading this who wants to play next season.
This year, if you didn't want the consensus #1, it was tough, because there were two guys in the elite (Chris Johnson and Adrian Peterson). So you couldn't ask the guy at #3 if he wanted to trade up to #1 for a 5th or something. The guy at #2 would have taken AP. In previous years, there was at least the courtesy of there being three elite players to make that an option, with the classic Tomlinson, Alexander, Larry Johnson trifecta a few years back.
Double halfback systems are killing the NF- fantasy football.
