Sunshine Warning

Post by pinback »

In the coming weeks, I will be delving into a very deep analysis of the movie Sunshine, which although it is widely regarded as an "above-average sci-fi flick", is not given nearly the respect it is due. I will delve into depths of this movie which most people have missed entirely. Of course, most people missed watching the movie entirely, and I hope my analysis persuades you to give it a shot, at which point you will say "eh, above-average sci-fi flick", at which point you can re-read the analyses and get your shit straight.

This is because Sunshine is the second-best science fiction movie of all time, behind (admittedly, very far behind) 2001, and nobody realizes it.

I'm not ready to do it yet, just letting you know that it's coming up. It's a warning.

I've been checking on FIRECRAB every day and that didn't take off the way I expected it, either.

Firecrab was only scheduled originally for ten episodes. The fact that it went thirteen, including a THREE-PART EPIC, shows that it not only took off, it went into fucking orbit.

If I MAKE a Firecrab mug and/or MAKE a Firecrab shirt, will you sell them, BEN? I've got a little more free time for this shit lately, so this is a possibility.

I would like a Firecrab mug, I'll tell you that right now.

Huh. I consulted the good people at Caltrops after watching this movie, and they univerally despised it. They said it was a plagarism of Event Horizon. And they hated the casting and script.

I loved the casting! I wrote Ben during the middle of this movie, because it was finally a flick that showed us how the future of learned men will be: white men in the minority. Oh sure, we'll still be the main character, but we'll also cry like a bitch if we are second in command and become #1.

I have to give it three out of four. It was somewhat derivative of Event Horizon, wouldn't you agree?

As I think I indicated elsewhere, it is a conglomeration of MANY science fiction movies, featuring several very specific homages. Here's a few!
-----

Event Horizon
2001
Dark Star
Alien
The Black Hole (!)
Others!

-----

If it is derivative of one more than the other, Dark Star is the definite winner. I think Danny Boyle himself mentioned the desire to want to make a serious version of Dark Star, which is a pretty decent description of the movie.

But JESUS. Event Horizon was TERRIBLE! If something is derivative of something, but turns it into an actual "good movie", can we give it some bonus points for that, instead of deducting points? At least it wasn't derivative in the sense of being a GIANT PILE OF PUKE!

I have a question! Is it possible in this day and age to make one of these things without it turning into a slasher flick at the end? SHOULD people be trying to make these things without turning them into a slasher flick?

Because without that element of it, I realize, you get an episode of Star Trek. (They really should have made one where stuff goes wrong and it becomes a slasher flick. I guess that is more difficult with 1,000 people on the ship.)

The movie explores the depths of madness which can result with being faced with the infinite power of God (represented by the Sun here). Slashing is one manifestation of the madness, but more important than what Pinbacker does is what he says.

I think the thing that made me decide to get it from Deevey the Freebie DVD Jeebey, on eBay, was the fact that the psychologist was doin' the same shit as Pinbacker, only at the beginning of the film.

How brilliant was that! Well, I didn't catch it until Pinner - our Pinner - told me, so I would say that for me it was very brilliant.

But, do you really get burned to shit if you are between the sun and Mercury, like the Captain was? Is that accurate?

Dark Star? really? I read the book looong before I saw the movie. The book wasn't funny, not funny at all. Well, neither was the movie, but at least the movie TRIED.
