More EA fun

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

So. In the latest CGW podcast, they received retail boxed copies of BF 2142.

When you open the box, a big slip of paper falls out first, preceeding any discs or manuals. The slip of paper says, essentially, that 2142 includes monitoring software which runs while your computer is online, and records "anonymous" information like your IP address, surfing habits (probably via cookie scans), and other "computing habits" in order to report this information back to ad companies and ad servers, which generates in-game ads.

Now, I can live with certain in-game ads (though apparently there will be Dodge truck and Neon ads in the bleak, futuristic world of 2142), but including a lengthy description - outside of even the Eula - seems to indicate even EA knows that this is some shady borderline spyware shit. I don't support it and won't be buying 2142 (for a host of other reasons, too).
Ha ha ha. Never again! (Where "Never again!" is me paying for a retail copy of an EA game again. Holy shit, they are out of control.)

Oh, and I understand Ethan is rather cross with them in the other base.

The worst part is what a poor state the game is in. Basically the classes are nerfed, combined, and have had all their fuctionality stuffed into unlocks. It generally seems that in the long run there may be more depth but when you see that some of the upgrades are a normal sniper scope, basic frag grenades (FRG-1 in the future), AT mines, or a scope stabilizer it's pretty easy to realize what happened:
They decided on the natural combination of a few classes, Spec ops and the Sniper could easily be merged. Then they realized if a guy could have claymores and detpacks people would bitch. So they made them unlocks. Then they realized if a guy got those unlocks and could snipe and use det packs people would bitch. So they made the scope 2x and put a simple up down drift on it, and put the things to disable those in unlocks. This seems to be the trend for all characters. If the assault/medic started with paddles people might actually USE them, however, if you need to unlock paddles ... well who the fuck would unlock the paddles?

So really you're picking between the diversity of your old classes from the previous BF2 games, except you have a curve of time you need to invest online earning the ranks (why don't they just fucking charge for them?) that is going to head straight up the more of the old classes from BF you want to restore functionality to. Naturally, you'll blow your unlock points on shit like phasers, inviso-fields, personal shield systems, robot helpers, and Vulcan ears. Then you'll get your ass kicked on the clan server where everyone agreed to pick the paddles, heavy assault rifle, and frag grenades.

Beyond all this is to deny the fucking revenue for box sales, it's just not enough. I'm perfectly okay with a game spying on me even. Just not a shitty game.
Good point Bobby!

Either the robot helper or Vulcan ears were a joke. Can you guess which?

Why doesn't Robb just find a similiar topic on slashdot, then copy and paste their comments over here?

I'm sorry. Is this because I think the game is bad or because ICJ has a paranoid fear of big brother?

By the way, in case Whiny T. McWhiny up there goes and starts WHINING on some internet forum about how some other internet forum told him to go fuck off rather than debating, it's not WHAT you're saying, it's that you're a fucking anonamous. I mean, Jesus Christ. If you're going to come out of nowhere and start trashing on us for no reason at least have enough fucking self respect to bother and type in ghjlth into the user name field when you do it. We're not even asking for you to be literate here at the new joltcountry.com, just that you have a fucking name.

So for awhile, there's been a DVD firmware out for Xbox360 that lets you play backups with no chip.

EA started putting a new protection on their games starting with Tiger Woods 2k7...
THAT DOES NOT ALLOW YOU TO PLAY ORIGINALS, ONLY BACKUPS!!!

fucking geniuses over there.

(as an aside, this "feature" was cracked within 2 hours of when the firmware guys found it)
