The Thing game: After Effects!

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

Feel free to talk about the Thing game! For people who don't want to slog through 25 pages: it was ruined right before what could have been the last day when Draal posted the identities of the Things and Pinback saw it before Draal edited it.

Lessons learned? Comments? Takes? I wanted to see the game go off because I am interested in developing a PC version of this game. (In fact, I owe the Infinite Raven a message on that topic.) I got some interesting information out of it.

Also, please feel free to comment on the game I played on Quarter to Three. I tried to make my posts entertaining for the players and all who might read it later. At one point I channel "a bug" (a former JC and Pinback's Web Central poster!) when my arms are ripped off.

Thank you all for playing! Except, of course, for Draal who completely ruined the game. And Milker, who gave up. But everyone else! Thank you very much, indeed.

If people are interested in another round I'd be happy to give it a go. Obviously, less people for this one. I'd also like to implement a co-moderator, as Worm stated, and implement some different voting procedures that I saw work well in the Q23 game. But it's definitely something that doesn't benefit from dragging people inwards.

And perhaps Vampire might be a better game. It has a seer character, which takes a lot of the randomness out of it.

The things I miss when I log off for a few hours.

I had fun with it, really, which I didn't expect at first -- but once I found myself calling you from a sports bar to make sure I wasn't missing a vote or anything, I knew I was hooked.

Suggestions? A start-stop time for voting each round -- i.e. voting can't start until after the Things have picked (when that's an issue). That'd prevent something like my bozo move when I voted for Vitriola before realizing I was now a Thing as well.

Probably some other suggestions -- I think dual moderators is good -- but I gotta run right now.

I'd like to play The Thing again or something else. It was fun. And I hardly got to play at all because I died first.

I suggest that each voting day be in a new thread. Like sliced bread, it just makes things easier.

Yeah, I thought that, too. Also, how the hell did you post in the original thread, which was locked when I tried to post there? Was it MAGIC????

modgod powers that be.

a couple things
-I thought it funny that RobB picked me over his brother to play because he didn't want a raging asshole playing. Ironically, he got another asshole in his place. I would hesistate to describe myself as "raging", however, because that brings to mind hemmroids<sp>.

-worm had me snowed

I really enjoyed myself. I'd agree with making each new voting day a new thread, and I'd like to have a seer character at some point. Also an ew rule: "no fucking bipolar insane people". I mean I'm not the most stable of people, granted, but Jesus. I still say that everyone should post their own tests rather than having the moderator do it, and the moderator just says whether or not a person cheats and says he's a human when he's a thing. (But why woudul anyone do that? I mean, come on. Whinning the game isn't THAT important.)

I think when I say that I am Human and to not vote for me, you should all believe me, because I am telling the truth.

Worm, would you like to run a Vampire game? I think we can swing it with less people than last time. The seer element is also very interesting. I think we can handle the notifications through the BBS PM system (although you can always grab some random Voy.com forum to talk strategy with vampires, too).

Because I'd be up for a game as a player. No doubt!

I probably skimmed over it and missed it, but why was Draal so mad again?

Plus, I think they would have won, but who were the Things?

Just for posterity's sake, I think this is basically how the Thinging went:

Bruce was the original Thing
Bruce picked Aardvark
B&A chose Vitrola
B&A&V chose gsdgsd
Vitriola got caught
Aardvark got caught
Bruce got caught
gsdgsd chose Worm
G&W chose ChainGangGuy
G&W&C chose Draal

...and that proved to be a rather fateful decision. Anyhow, that's how it played out.

Draal had asked Aardvark to remove his account a few times before he had even started playing BBS The Thing. I would like to talk about what happened today, because it does sort of affect the future of this place to some degree.

I am not sure why Draal asked Vark this. Draal and I had sent some PMs back and forth to each other about MAME ROMs and that sort of thing and he wrote a nice review of Pantomime that (last I knew) he was trying to get Mark Musante to post on the IF Review site.

I suspect that Draal wasn't built for the sort of banter that goes on around here. This is just a guess, but I think that when he'd see Pinback call him a "moron," he took it personally. I don't know. I am sure that, towards the end, he didn't appreciate it.

In fact, that's one of the things I'd like to see addressed. Ben was very upset when a "WJW" blast was dropped on his girlfriend. But come on - Ben would admit that he was just as rude to Draal and that's not fucking fair. Ben, you're my pal and all, but I wish you would less mean (even fake mean) to the new people that come around here. You can call me an idiot cockdick all you want. I have known you for years. But as I have said many times before I don't want to run a place where the possibility of new people coming by is zero.

That being said, Draal is hardly the innocent flower here.

Draal liked being on the side of the humans. That much was certain. I think a perfectly legitimate tactic to use in a game like BBS The Thing is to say, "If y'all pick me, you'll regret it, Things." The Things don't have to pick everyone to win. In fact, I think I had a similar vibe going in the game I played on Quarter to Three. But for everything Draal believes, he was chosen because he was the strongest human player. I wish he could have taken some small solace in that.

Draal was editing his posts lots and it looked like he was going back and forth with Worm. There is one indefensible thing to do in BBS The Thing and that's reveal the names of the other players. And even after doing that I can't say I am honestly all worked about it. But Jesus Christ, I blew a number of evenings here recently to get some of those pictures done. I know they aren't particularly good, but I am trying to develop my graphic art skills and I feel like a moron for spending time on that when I have an image due for Bruce's game and my brother wants me to design a tattoo for him. The Thing jpgs didn't need to be masterpieces, and there were some techniques I was trying to master before doing the Bruce image and the tattoo design, but still. That right there is a slap in the face to me, regardless of the fact that I wasn't raging and raving. It's like when you go to a bar and the bartender takes forever to serve you, but you're with a pretty girl so who cares. You can recognize the insult without it runing your day.

So after that Draal now asks me to delete his account. I only have so much sympathy and besides, it's a stupid BBS open to the public. Who gives a shit. So I deleted his account. He then posts from a backup account asking for the other one to be turned back on, blah blah blah. I don't know if he is unstable or if he trolled us all or what, but whatever. I hope he's in a better place now. I cut off access from his IP addresses, but he's smart enough to get around it. Great. Nobody was making any money here, it was just a bunch of friends trying to play a board game over a board. There's no need to ruin that.

I hope that sheds some light on the situation, anyway.

Huh, crazy stuff. So what's the consensus on the game itself? I mean, it's not like I thought it was wicked awesome but I'm onlly really paying attention to one thread these days so it's not a bad thing for me to lock on to.

What the fuck do you have to be so goddamned pissy about anyway, Pinback? The last time I checked your not actual blog blog (before you spilled shit on your computer like a genius)--which was what, three months ago?--you were living life with your ladylove and apparently enough money to throw at upgrading to a new HD TV. I don't give a shit about you doing that, if you have money go ahead and spend it--but to not have anything to bitch about but spend that time picking at people over the internet for no good damn reason is just fucking weak, and it doesn't help that when someone does the exact same thing to someone *you* actually care about you get all offended for her.

What's great is that now when you see me calling you out in a rude and callous manner for being a complete woman passive-aggressively (and at times not so PASSIVE-aggressively) trolling the little life out of this BBS because--what? Are you just bored?--you're going to get very upset at me ranting about you. But I dont' give a shit. Normally I would be more polite about this sort of thing but I just don't fucking care with this because you've been doing the exact same thing to everyone here for years.

It was obvious to everyone present that you were poking Draal, that Draal didn't like it, and that you didn't give a shit. I guaranty you that the only reason why I'm still on this forum is because I find it refreshing that all of you guys *don't* take any of this shit personally and can go back and forth endlessly without any of it pissing you off. But if someone isn't liking it it's not right of anyone to keep insulting them.

Right now you're the equivalent of the popular guy in school singling some guy randomly in the halls and making fun of him for his height while tipping a "oh aren't I so clever?" wink at the groupies behind you. Only in reality you're not actually that popular on here.

With JQW I can't feel much sympathy because I remember him being a dick to basically everyone who dared to not agree with him on absolutely everything the entire time, but Draal never did anything to you except call you a thing. And if that actually offended you, you have a problem. Of course it didn't and you were just playing your "Ohhh, he got me, so now I have to get him back one" game--which is fine as long as we're both playing that game to see how creative the insults get. But when someone starts playing for keeps it's time for the other guy to back off. I think it's clear to everyone--and was clear to everyone for months--that Draal had a screw loose, or several screws loose. That doesn't make him a moron, he could talk tech with any and all of us and not get lost.

In the thing game he cared enough to do all those charts and figuring out voting paterns. I cared about the game more than I let on--for whatever reason, and I dont' care now that it's been ruined--and I still couldn't be bothered to pay that close attention. And how does he get rewarded for that? Constant abuse? Seriously, everyone else--I am not at a place right now where I can deal with a new person getting bent out of shape every week because someone else violated his or her increasingly complex moral code. We're all funny, smart people who know the difference between a chrisis and somethign ot just fucking let go. This forum has for a long time been the only place I can go to where I can be guarantyed something that I'll find entertaining. Almost all of my friends have fallen into this same trap of making an exciting event out of every single going-on--"You didn't say hello to me in 2 minutes? That obviously means you hate me and are ignoring me! I'm deleting this ID and never speaking to you again!" Only they never, ever do and they keep harrassing me with this pointless shit. You've all seen these silly "internet circles of friends! ^__^" and you've all seen them come apart because the kids are idiots and only are "friends" because they spend all the time they're around each other talking about how right or hot or all-around awesome they all are.

I don't want to see this website turn into the "everybody hates me, nobody loves me, I might as well go eat worms" bar grill and oil change because if it does, I've nowhere else fucking left to be where at the end of the day I know where everybody stands and I don't have some asshole waiting to snipe at me when I'm not around.

PS: I dont' give a fuck what happens to my message, let it be roasting in Hell for all I care.

I don't know why line breaks "work" and help out the way they do. It's weird. It shouldn't matter, ultimately. Anyway, I added a few returns. Should be all good for everyone now.

And Draal said he was sorry in e-mail. I always liked him. If he wants his account restored I'd do it, why not. It's not like we're all working for the Department of Defense or something.
