[Infinitesimal Review] American Splendor

Post by pinback »

American Splendor is a creatively told docudrama about a person which I'm guessing a number of you in the comics biz know something about.

I really have not much to say about this movie. Like I said, the story it tells is told creatively, and the mish-mashing of the real Harvey Pekar (along with real David Letterman clips, the most interesting moments of the film) with the fictionalized version is fascinating to watch, but... I mean... is this an interesting story? Depressed, miserable sociopath writes comics about his own life, but continues to be depressed and miserable.

And we know by the end that to this day he's depressed and miserable, and wouldn't seem to want it any other way.

So, I guess what I'm asking is, what the fuck should I care?

Three stars, though.

If you put the actor playing Harvey Pekar in a giant tube of mustard, he'd look eerily familiar, that's what.
