Synthesizer setup

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

Trying to figure this out by typing... I have a "Keystation Mini 32 MK3" - it is the device mentioned on this BBS before, for making music. All it does is give you a toy, basically, that lets you hit the keys on a piano. I can use it to play music and modify it in Ableton. If this is all I had, I would be good.

It has one output, USB.

I own a Behringer Model D synthesizer It has MIDI in and "thru." It also has a "headphones" jack.

I think what I want to do is:

Keystation -> Model D -> Ableton basically acting as a recorder of the actual sound the synthesizer makes. I could go from the phones jack to the line in on my soundcard.

Is what I really need something other than the Keystation though? Do I really need some kind of musical keyboard with true MIDI out? So I could go from MIDI out to that, to MIDI in on the Model D and then somehow get that audio into my computer?

So the keystation is a keyboard controller, right? It does not actually make any sound by itself but lets you play sounds on other devices, like the Behringer. Ableton is your DAW, right?

Try this for getting the midi signal into the pc

Thanks! I was able to get the instruments working a couple of years ago.

I had never gotten the Behringer to make a sound I liked, though. I hooked it up again this week and found this Youtube video. It has settings (called "patches", I guess?) and I was able to dial the thing in as noted, and I have some synth leads that I like now.

I will not give up on this. I should be able to open Ableton and have it record a minute of synthesizer sounds. Start small.

Is there a huge learning curve ti Ableton? Can't stand it when trying to do something using software when it was so much easier with old hardware. I'm looking at you, Virtual Instruments!

After I swapped out my dead PC for the nephew's in the big white case I had this annoying background noise when recording. I futzed around with every setting I could think of but it was still there. Then I discovered the USB cables were the problem. I unplugged the Digitech and the recording cable from the mixer and Viola! Of course now I have to use the analog line in/out for everything. Oh well, it's quiet now.

I also updated the standard Windows audio with some Realtec drivers. I think it made a difference as well, but that might be a placebo thing. Now I just have to record music instead of just messing with the hardware.
