Longlegs - Review (Possible spoilers)

Post by Jizaboz »

A few weeks back, I found an AMC gift card laying on the ground. Downloaded the AMC to check it and free 20$! Once I saw the preview to this movie I figured I might as well burn it.

This theater had reclining seats with electric controls. Also, heated seats. In the dim theater I managed to accidentally turn the heat on about 10 times yet it took me forever to find the recliner control. Once it worked though I was like "WOW this why tickets are 8-10$ these days!" It was so comfortable I could have fallen asleep in the most interesting of moments. This may give you some idea of the last time I went to a theater to see a movie; all of this was new to me. Popcorn prices were so stupid I didn't even consider. Instead grabbed a 5$ deal from McDonalds as a snack to share on the way then ate good at a Japanese place on the way home.

Anyway, what interested me in this movie was that it seemed to have an X-Files vibe in the trailer and Nick Cage is the bad guy. Is he though? IS HE?! He may have some strange Satanic power (??? lol) yet his legs aren't visually long. For some reason I was expecting some visual of him walking with freakishly long legs. Like a David Lynch film, this is one you have to think about. When he delivered the line in the beginning of "I've got my long legs on" I was sitting there thinking "That's exactly what I would think of an older man or even me older saying to a kid.. but I don't know why." That must have been something I heard an older relative tell me when I was very little. I google it much later and AHA.. it was a saying adults would say before they squat down to get eye-level with kids. heh-heh

If that sort of thing interests you, go check it out. If you are expecting "extreme" scares or gore, this is not that kind of movie. I would call it a "A strange psychological horror film." Nick Cage performance, especially when singing is totally over the top but wtf else do we expect from Nick Cage? At times I thought about how there was a lot I could start to relate to Joaquin Phoenix's depiction of the Joker as well as this guy.. until of course he starts killing people lol. Killing aside, pact with Satan aside, this poor guy Nick Cage plays just wanted to have fun while everyone from his childhood moved on to be adults. The fact that he makes these extremely realistic dolls also speaks to him wanting to hold onto things outside his grasp in reality.

The main character isn't annoying! Though I'm sure some people will say so for her "quirks"; which are explained later in the movie. She seems like a real person that is good at her job but is also fairly messed up in the head. He mother on the other hand is straight up awful and evil and possibly deserved it lol

I have heard it is best to go in without knowing anything about it. So!

Thank you for writing this. I hope to read the entire post within a couple of weeks, if I can get to the theater!

I found this NPR review to be good. The only thing I would disagree with is the comparison to Silence of the Lambs. I’m not seeing any connection there.

I forgot about this movie. I should see it if it's still in theaters.

Well, you have a female FBI agent tracking down a serial killer and she gets personally involved. I can see the connection, yeah. Both Lee Harker and Clarice Starling are quiet to the point of probably autism, too.

LOVED this movie. Glad I went in blind. I love every choice the director made, from having the current President's picture on the wall so you knew the approximate year the scenes were taking place in, to the 4:3 resolution for some of the 1970s footage, to just how much we see of Longlegs for the first half of the film.

"I've got my longlegs on," DAMN, I am glad you looked that up. I could swear I have heard that expression used. Huh.
