The Boys from Brazil (1978)

Random end of year watch.

This was originally a novel, written by Ira Levin, who also wrote Rosemary's Baby and The Stepford Wives.

Anyway, a secret society of former/new Nazis are attempting to revive the Third/Fourth Reich (and the movie is set mostly in Paraguay, actually). It's considered 'sci-fi', possibly because the main plot point involves 'cloning' and some sort of DNA-gargle-bargle. Lawrence Olivier as Nazi hunter! Gregory Peck is Joseph Mengele!

Pretty watchable. Most memorable line: "I care more about n!33rs than Nazis". Which, from my vantage in 2022, struck me as possibly the most prescient thing about it.

This has Raul Julia, too, right? I've always meant to watch it, but it also sounded like something I wasn't particularly interested in so I appreciate the write-up!

I realize, some days later, that I was actually thinking about "The Kiss of the Spider Woman," which is about some guys in Brazil so I always get those two movies confused with the other.

It is indeed an entertaining film. I found it rather reassuring in the end because the conclusion reached is basically, "Sure, you can clone Hitler, and you can try to make the clones grow up in a similar environment as actual Hitler. Even so, you still won't end up recreating the Fuhrer." The clones might be messed up in their own individual ways, but they're not actually Hitler since they don't have Hitler's memories. That's a relief because one was way more than enough.

I also thought this movie had one of the most random, unexpected nude scenes ever.
