My theory about great shows/movies.
I was forced to reiterate my theory after the last episode of The Walking Dead, which is why I'm posting it here instead of in the movies base, but either way:
THEORY: There has never been a great movie or TV show that had any unlikeable characters.
Obviously this is not to say great shows/movies can't have "bad guys". Khan and Hans Gruber were bad guys, but they were not unlikeable. They had a richness of character to them that made them fun to watch. Your bad guys have to be likeable too.
Walter White was a bad guy, but don't even try telling me you didn't like him.
The latest episode of The Walking Dead, which brought this back to the forefront of my addled mind, features a lot of likeable characters, but one purely unlikeable one. The kind of bad guy who is just annoying, who was written in such a way that the writers wanted you to hate him, which you do, but that's the lazy writer's way out, and why TWD is a good show, but can never be a great one.
Can you name one show or movie you consider great that has a purely unlikeable character?
Christ, even Bruce had his redeeming qualities. (*)
(*) Mayor Vaughan was very close to being the purely unlikeable character in Jaws, but his scene in the hospital redeemed him. He was pathetic and stupid, sure, but at least there was a semblance of depth there, at the end.

TNG was a great show, you're saying? You're signing your name to that one?

Yes! Except season 1. And most of season 2. And, uh, parts of season 7...

TNG was not a great show. Good, yes! Nobody's saying we didn't enjoy us some TNG.

TNG was a great show to me. Not just good, but great. If you asked me if TNG was even greater than Breaking Bad, my answer would be yes. There's many great shows out there, and I watched them exactly once. TNG is great enough as to make me watch it again once in a while.

No, he is the greatest character to ever be on the show.

Well, then you would not know the character.

Re: My theory about great shows/movies.
What keeps TWD from being a great show is not that it occasionally has purely unlikeable characters (which it does) but at times it's just not very good.
We still watch it, though. I'm enjoying the last season a lot. But I mean, there are episodes with Negan in it, and there are episodes without him, and that's generally my barometer anymore.
Negan got terrible and embarrassing by the time he left, but now he's back, and much better.
My wife has dreams about Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and you know what? I'm okay with that.

Re: My theory about great shows/movies.
There was this entitled bratty kid who was the son of the big boss who ran the latest place that they had to escape from, and the point of him was to be an entitled bratty kid who acted like a jackass because he could get away with it.
I cannot believe how much I agree with my take in this thread. This may be my best opinion ever. Well, it was, until I formed my opinion that a cat isn't dumb enough to go back and look for her zeroth kitten.
