I saw "Ed Wood" before seeing this one, and that's the order I recommend viewing them in. Not just because I did it that way and that should be good enough for anyone, but because it makes sense out of something that would otherwise be a complete train wreck.
Seeing "Ed Wood" answered the question as to why Vampira was in this movie and why she didn't speak. It spoke to where the hell Tor Johnson came from and who the hell that Criswell guy was supposed to be.
On the other hand, I'm betting the movie is a lot funnier if you don't know all the answers. So why am I trying to rob you out of a little bit of fun? It's because Plan 9 From Outer Space isn't the worst movie I've ever seen, just the most incompetently made. I'd still say it was less boring than several other movies I've seen and people I've spoken to, and I think being boring is a worse crime than being incompetent. Although it is.
But if Ed got any better at making movies, this would be easier to take. He was just really bad at it, sadly, and never -- as far as I have read -- improved his craft.
One out of five stars.
