Dig Dug

From 1982-2012, my Dig Dug was around 30,000 points. That is a terrible score. I have been playing Dig Dug non-stop for the past two weeks and my high score is currently 85,720.

This is the thread in which we will all talk about Dig Dug. Maybe we will share stories about Dig Dug, or strategies, or high scores. Whatever you want to talk about, any topic on Earth, as long as it's about Dig Dug.

I will say that I learned that the game is all pattern based and programmed so after playing it enough times you will develop patterns. I have learned many scoring tricks and facts over the past two weeks which I will be sharing with you all shortly.

I remember seeing the game and probably had a copy for the PC at one time, I'm not sure if it was the real Dig Dug or a clone; it would not be that hard to write a similar game.

I knew one guy who was more-or-less fixated on the game, he rebuilt his Fortran compiles to name the executables he'd write for programming classes to have the name DIGDUG which just fits in Fortran's then limit of 6 characters for program names.

Since I have to use short messages I'll continue it here. One strategy I would use is to get into an area and get the tunnel to collapse behind me, which would protect you until they ghosted and started ignoring the walls. This meant that you could then go through and dig for the diamonds or other things in the untunnelled areas and then once you got the bonus items you could go after the NPCs.

The big problem was getting the dragon, making sure you got to him and sticking your bicycle pump hose up his ass and blowing him before he toasted you.

Has anyone noticed if someone's done a Flash game of Dig Dug? I found one here
http://www.heavygames.com/digdug/gameframe.asp but it's a Java app and apparently the Java plugin causes problems with Firefox. I found another at http://www.fupa.com/game/Puzzles-flash- ... g-dug.html but the damn scroller only shows you part of the screen

0nce the ground turns to that sandy looking material I get all freaked out and die quickly. I have it on my PS3 and the game is easier with a joystick than a controller.

This is the best Dig Dug advice ever.

(Except for the fact that you can't make the tunnels collapse and there are no diamonds in the game.)

The key to high scores in Dig Dug is understanding how the scoring works. It sounds obvious now, but for example on level one I used to get 1,000-2,000 points, and now I get 6,000 points every time.

The first tip is that the lower in the dirt you are, the more points you get for killing creatures. From top to bottom it's 200, 300, 400, and 500 points. Additionally, if you pop Fygar from the side, you get double the points, making it 400, 600, 800, or 1,000 points. Just by knowing that alone, if you were to kill all four creatures on level one at the top of the playfield you would get 800 points. If you did it near the bottom, and got Fygar from the side, you would get 2,500.

In early levels, the key to maximizing points is dropping rocks on you enemies. Dropping a rock on one enemy gets you 1,000 points. It's 1,500 points more for the second and third creatures and 2,000 points more for every additional one, so three will net you 4,000 and four will get you 6,000. That's how I am able to get 6,000 points on level one. You'll have to spend some time coming up with a good pattern, but once you get one you'll be able to kill all four creatures on level one with a single rock.

The third tip is to get the bonus items, which appear after the second rock has dropped. These start with a carrot which is only worth 400 points, but the points quickly rise and soon they will be worth 1,000, 2,000, and more. There's a key strategic shift you'll have to make at some point when the bonus items become worth more than killing the enemies.

You also get 10 points for every square of dirt you dig. I'm sure this comes in to play if you are going for the world record but I haven't really factored that into my strategy as of yet.

Around level 9 the game speeds up significantly. All my strategy goes out the window at that point and it becomes purely survival mode.

You can drop rocks.

There is a similar game in which you can block the tunnel and you have to dig through ground, and your objective is to capture the objects before the guys guarding the area get through the tunnel and catch you, and I was confusing it with Dig Dug.

It's going to be a long 360 days.

To that I say, "boulderdash!"
