Concert Review: Van Halen

A friend of mine is a huge Van Halen fan, a bunch of fellas got together to see Van Halen as his birthday is tomorrow.

REVIEW

Eddie Van Halen: Unbelievable! Are there still people wondering if he is the greatest guitarist of all-time? That being said, I would like to see a five-minute conversation between Eddie Van Halen and Robert Fripp. A+

Alex Van Halen: Every single time this guy plays a note it's perfect. A+

Wolfgang Van Halen: He is playing bass and singing the high parts of songs that Michael Anthony used to sing. A+

David Lee Roth: Well, now. This is the kicker, isn't it?

Look, I like DLR. I think he's one of the best rock frontmen in history. I think his voice, on the early VH records, sounded great, I think that he needed Eddie and Eddie needed him and I support getting 3/4ths of the band back together.

So I am just saying that David Lee Roth did not actually do a lot of singing last night.

I am not going to get snarky and try to creatively attack the man's performance. But either he can't sing or he chose not to. You could say that for many of the songs, his inability to get through them totally detracted. I don't know what the deal was. Who doesn't know the words to Panama?

It was very weird and unlike anything I've ever seen. Kool and the Gang opened -- Kool and Gang has a singer in his 20s or 30s. If the VH boys really want to do this, well, I don't see how they can keep doing it without a guy signing the songs correctly.

It's up for some debate.

EDIT: However, if you were going to take EVH's side in the debate, you would certainly want to cite this, which is the best thing he ever did, and it wasn't even for the band:

I always found it amazing that the original Van Halen lineup with Roth was 8 years (counting from when Van Halen I was released to when Roth left the band) and Hagar was the lead singer for 11 years. And Gary Cherone was the lead singer for 12 minutes. Then there was a 2 year reunion with Hagar and then a 2 year reunion with Hagar. I'd have to do a lot more math than I'm willing to do right now, but Hagar may still have had more time at the mic than Roth. (That being said, it's still Roth's band.)

When I saw Guns and Roses back in the early 90s, Axl was terrible. He became infamous for it later, but I was surprised to hear how terrible he was live. Rob Zombie was the same way, hitting about 1 out of every 3-4 words in between breaths.

This is still the greatest Van Halen recording ever.

They did not, sir. I've heard that when Hagar is with them they'll do some songs that Roth sang on, but not the reverse.

That's a difficult question to debate because there's so many things that go into it. I've seen guitarists on video sites that sound absolutely phenomenal but have never left their bedrooms in twenty years. Then you have phenomenal professional guitarists that have been around forever but you've never heard of them* because they never get any press.
I guess it boils down to a matter of preference. Personally I was never much for the blazing fast, 128th note shred sound, although in small doses it's not bad. I like the more melodic soloing style, myself.

VH was supposed to be playing Rochester next month... and we got hosed by the "We're doing too much too fast, so our tour is on 'hiatus' bullshit."

Not happy at all.

David Lee Roth was just CLOWNING out there. It was a production fit for clowns, put on by clowns and inspired by clowns. 20 of him should have emerged from an old Volkswagon.

At one point he got pissed because some water was all over the stage and the crew didn't do a good enough job cleaning it up. He said something about how the people here tonight deserved the best or something. So he cleaned up the water himself. That was might nice of him, but I'd have preferred it if he had left the water and hit a goddamn note.

Let's welcome Da King back and make sure he doesn't see the video Tdarcos posted of making tuna helper, or else Da King's next post will probably be, "I'm out."

That sounds like the review for EVERY OTHER SHOW VH HAS DONE THIS ENTIRE TOUR.

Lovely.

Hopefully, once they "recharge", DLR will get over himself and have some fun. ANd take some voice lessons.
