[INFINITESIMAL REVIEW] Inception

I was all geeked for this. Dude who made Memento coming home after becoming a big star with his Batman stuff to prove he still had that "indie" flavor. Plus, everyone loves it.

Well.

Eh, it's okay! Well done? I guess? If you find the "dream within a dream" dynamic to be mindblowing, you'll be mindblown.

All I know is, all I heard was how incredibly complex and infathomable movie the movie was, and I was ready to be blown away, but what I got was a decent Star Trek episode combined with a competent caper movie, and some money special effects (all of which take place in the first 30 minutes of the movie, by my count.)

But yeah. It's a goddamn CAPER movie. With some dream-within-dream mythology mixed it. Complicated, no. Interesting, kinda.

Worthy of all the suckage? Eh.

There are two parts I'll always remember:

The kid from "Brick" coming up with the solution to buy them more time, by having them freefall in the elevator. It was worth making the movie just for that bit. That would have been the greatest text game puzzle ever, if it had ever been a text game puzzle.

And then the top wobbling at the end. Well, its single wobble. Ha hahahah.

I don't know or care what parts were all a dream. I do like reading about other people's interpretations of it all. So I am not saying I agree or disagree with what I am about to link to, but it's a good link:

Inception is about making movies, and cinema is the shared dream that truly interests the director.
FAAAAAAARRRRT.

The last frame, the spinning top, is supposed to be deep, but is thoroughly unacceptable. We all know it's coming, and we're just hoping that when it comes, it's going to mean something.

It doesn't.

EMPEROR??? CLOTHES?????

A movie with a guy dreaming in it is the mark of a sad, desperate filmmaker.

The more you think about it, the less impressed you (you, peronally) are with Christopher Nolan.

Memento is one of the greatest movies of all time, without question.

Since then, though?

Insomnia was a well made but rather plodding thriller.

First Batman was eh.

Second Batman was fantastic, but only because of Heath Ledger, not because of any grand masterstrokes from the director.

Inception is, as far as I can tell, a wildly overrated, semi-clever sci-fi flick.

Come on CHRIS. Get it together.

I was expecting some unfair thing where the end would explain how my perception of the 80% of the movie was wrong, but since I am a lazy viewer, I thought it was great when it turned out that, no, the movie has pretty much been upfront about everything and it's nowhere near as complicated as people would have you believe. The top at the end is kind of dumb because it gives people something to grasp onto when they want to needlessly complicate it, but oh well, I know how I insist on interpreting it.

SPOILER

I thought the elevator part was cute, but exactly why does it work? Wouldn't the elevator suffer the same lack of gravity that everyone else has?

I thought there was an explosion rigged to propel the elevator at the correct time, to simulate gravity.

Anyway, I like the movie less every time I think about it.

If it beats Social Network for Best Picture, you're all dead.

The Social Network was 3/10 funny, and 7/10 'King of Kong'-worthy made-up lies.

As it was neither intended as a comedy or a documentary, you still have 10 out of 10 points to account for.

Say what you will about Christopher Nolan, but The Prestige is breathtakingly good.

Am I the only one who has confused Christopher Nolan with Darren Aronofsky? Specifically, Pi and Memento, then the Prestige and the Fountain both seemed to embody an aesthetic that was strange yet familiar to each other. Batman is distinct enough to not intertwine in this way, I occasionally assume that Inception was by the guy who did "Pi" and The Wrestler/Black Swan was by the guy who did Memento.

Though this thought has been largely corrected...

Agreed, there is a commonality to their work that tickles the back of your mind. In my opinion, but also 1,000% true.

This (INTENTIONAL MISUSE OF "BEGS THE QUESTION" WARNING) begs the question: Which is better, Memento or Requiem for a Dream?

FIGHT!

Memento.

Come on. Even I know that.

This also goes for any of the other 50 movies nominated for Best Picture. And Oscar Week is almost here! ARE YOU READY TO DIE??

Pi and Memento have always been advertised as the artsy movies that, "You didn't see! You Troglodytes!" And "Social Network" is basically the story of a BBS software developer becoming a BBS Admin and being forced to go through a series of trials and tribulations...

The fact that the ideas or people associated with these topics are now mainstream enough to be even associated with an Oscar are well.... Everyone here is ready to die, right?

Thank you for bumping this thread, Aardvark, so I can say this about hygraed's opinion of the Prestige, which I guess I missed the first time:

BAHAHvhAbslhdsahdhahdahaa. Get real. The only way you can be serious is if you're doing a riff on that Seinfeld episode where the dude kept calling everyone "breathtaking".

Prestige sucked. Inception is forgettable, and as such has been forgotten. Heath Ledger is still great, and also still dead. Memento is still one of the best movies ever. Aronofsky's body of work now eclipses Nolan's, and that's not even counting The Fountain, which I thought was borderline inexcusable.

DISCLAIMER: My opinions on everything are correct.
