This story reads just as stupid as it sounded back then. NO CRIME COMMITTED. Completely dumb local law enforcement, even at a high level.
I still recall my grandfather talking to my grandmother the day this happened. His first words to the FEDZ as they said "Stan, we're shutting it down." were "Ha. Fuck you."
Stanford Justice Phipps was my grandfather whom died around this time 20+ years ago. I grew up knowing him as "cool papaw" but he was a hell of a lot more complex than that. I hung out with him every day I could until I was 21 and working for the local newspaper. Day trips to Walmart/Putt-Putt. Evening trips to eat at K/W Cafeteria and hit up the local big comic shop.. where I commonly bought rather "adult" comix lol. I didn't even know until a bit after his funeral he was a USMC sergeant major (previously all I knew was marines and he was on boats) who lead raids on islands occupied by Japanese military. Apparently for one to have that rank, that job, get shit done, and LIVE was a huge achievement according to people older than me.
After the war he learned math to work at the local power company climbing poles in storms and shit. Played a lot of baseball and golf. Pitching fuct his shoulder, so he made some money playing golf; meeting Arnold Palmer and shit (still have a signed hat). The rest of his money he made gambling on black jack.
