Will the Sabres make the playoffs???
I dunno. They can score. They need one more defenseman and they need a goalie. We have exactly the guys we need (Ryan Johnson, defenseman and Devon Levi, goalie) in college. Johnson is apparently wishy washy about playing for the Sabres and I don't know why - we OBVIOUSLY need him and he'd be playing with Owen Power for christ's sake. I've heard things like how he wants to hold out until he becomes a free agent and go to LA. But Christ, get your career started. It's aggravating. Levi also wanted to return to college for another season. The two guys we need, and there is a chance they don't come to the NHL, wait until Buffalo's rights expire, and we lose them. (We'd probably trade them beforehand, but still.)
I tried to buy tickets to see the Sabres play the Avalanche on Thursday. I bought them while I was in SF for work. Everything seemed fine. "Odd I never got charged," I say today and I look and ... the order was approved. Then canceled. And these tickets were $114 a piece.
I went back to Stubhub to buy them and now they are $34+ fees each. WTF? Thanks? I guess? Saved everyone money?
Oh! Then I had to buy the tickets, have them sent to Ticketmaster, create a Ticketmaster account which failed to register me the first time, then go back in and change my password, set the password for the NEW account and get the tickets "transferred" to me. Why is everything a fucking mess when it comes to sports tickets? All the time? In every case? I guess we have them now and I am not complaining that money was saved.
There is a nice goal I'll post next.

I do love this goal. The Sabres did go on a giant losing streak afterwards. But the team has more promise than any time since like 2006, when I was not closely following them.

I was at the Sabres @Avalanche game on Thursday with my wife and friends from college. (Special thanks to Milker for getting me into the building, but he was not feeling well enough to join us.)
Tage Thompson for the Sabres has been putting up the best numbers since Pat LaFontaine in the 90s. He scored 5 goals the other day and I was making jokes to my wife that she had to stay until Tage put up 6 against the Avs.
Well, just over a minute into the game and he did this:
How often does something in entertainment truly live up to the hype? Thanks, Tage. Sure, the Avs had players that were injured, but so did we. The best part about picking first overall every year like Buffalo does is that when a guy who was picked first overall tweaks something in warm ups, you get to say "we were down a 1 overall pick."
I have seen the Sabres win a couple times in that building, as I have been going to their appearances for years. I honestly don't think I have missed many of their visits in Colorado over the last 13 year or so. One thing I will say about the home crowd is that they get a little pissy when losing. You'd like to see the passion. I guess? I haven't been to a Buffalo home game in 20+ years, so who knows how they get. On our way out the taunts I remember to Buffalo people walking out of the stadium in general were:
"Jack Eichel owns you!!!!"
"WHERE ARE THE CUPS???"
I mean, sure, Jack had a hat trick this year but one of the guys we traded for (Alex Tuch) also scored the second goal in the game for us and I have already posted about how hilarious it was last year when Tuch stole the puck from Eichel and scored an empty netter to cement the victory. That is when I honestly think things started to turn around. I don't begrudge Eichel for wanting to get the surgery that would offer him the best quality of life. I'm glad he got it for his back and he's doing well. It was never gonna work out in Buffalo. Our GM made the fairest trade possible under the circumstances, I think (Tuch, Peyton Krebs and a pick that became Noah Ostlund).
So I would rate the trade an A for both teams and an F for the poor taunt. SORRY LOSERS!!!!! Well, losers except that Colorado the team is the defending world champs.
Everyone always brings their best game against the champions, so what are ya gonna do.

Oh, so a friend of ours from college lives in Maine. He has been a Sabres fan all of his life.
I was on a group text and before the game, he told us that Owen Power (age: 19) tweaked something in warm ups and did not play.
At the game we were surrounded by other Sabres fans. One overheard that Power was out - it was not announced during the game or anything - and asked if anyone new why.
I said, "When I was 19 I didn't consistently make it to work either" but it was drowned out because of the large crowd. But I was proud of saying that, so you all get to see it and give me the validation I desperately crave. I need this.

The Sabres beat Vegas tonight. I guess Jack Eichel, in fact, does now own the Sabres.

As I get back into hockey and learn who the bad guys are that nobody likes, it seems that the goalie that was scored on, Jordan Binnington, is someone who is reviled. I dunno, everyone hated my former Saints coach and I love him so I need to see for myself, but.

I'm sick of everyone fawning over the Michigan. OK, it's a cool goal. It was fun to see when the first one was scored. But now we've reached a point where multiple are being scored in a night. It's no longer news-worthy.
And I hope someone drives Trevor Zegras thru the boards. He can't score any kind of skilled goal, and he's soft. He's just out there to showboat. Kick his ass.

The Sabres went into a tailspin and lost me in terms of trying to watch their games every night. I don't even know how to define why they are SO bad. Almost everyone regressed.
Trade today though. Our best performing player, center Casey Mittlestadt, to the Avalanche for defenseman Byron Bowen.

I'm seeing a lot of trades where the draft pick value increases if one team wins the Stanley Cup.
If Bettman keeps fucking around and allowing this, there's going to be a game where two teams involved in such a trade play each other and one team needs a win to get into the playoffs. Or one team needs a win to get an easier opponent.
Then you'll have the worst regular season sporting event ever.
You can't allow this but all four commissioners are stupid and horrible and incompetent so there ya go.

Until the last two games, the Sabres have been one of the best teams in the NHL over the past 2 months or so!

I'm OK with this trade. The Sabres have forward prospects coming out the ass, and have zero depth on the blue line. This opens up a spot for a forward, and adds another good young blue liner. Buffalo has 5 very good d-men 23 or younger.
Also, Mitts was going to get PAID after this season. He's having a breakout offensive season after his bridge contract. He'll want more money, and Buffalo has gotten burned on these deals SO MANY TIMES. Trade Mitts while he value is high. Good move for Buffalo if Byram can avoid going full-on jelly head.

I saw something about how they were like 12-3 with Bryson or something haha. I just started reading about how they were the worst team in the league before that and sellers and all that. I really do not look at any other standings. I don't think I could name two players per team for the rest of the league at the moment. Well, I could for the Avs but that is in no small part due to the fact that we sent them Casey.
I didn't watch the game tonight but I should have, because my wife was out and I did nothing. Good to see the new guy and Power hook up for a goal though!

Some Sabres were traded, including Erik Johnson.
He was on the Avalanche team during a cup win. I will never forget the touching tribute video played at the Ball Arena when I was there to see the Sabres play the Avalanche, followed up by Johnson immediately turning the puck over on the shift that followed, leading to an Avalanche goal.

Ultimately Johnson and Shattenkirk for Chris Stewart was a good trade. All is forgiven.
