So, it is a quiet Friday night, I have the evening to myself, going to finally start working on music.... just going to fire up ole Abelton Live.
Oh. It can't find the auth server. Well, it's been a while, I'll just re-authorize.... good! It found it! All set!
Go to play my work in progress..... oh, told I cannot save or export because it can't find the auth server. I'll just re-authorize..... good! It found it! All set!

Software licensing like this DOES NOT WORK. There have been many times where I had the time and energy to play games for a half hour and that entire time was spent with the PS4 or a game or Steam updating. Why does nothing ever work with software? How is this remotely acceptable?

Try Reaper DAW. I used it in the past, and it's great. It's also perpetual shareware that never expires. But it's also cheap if you want to buy it, and I don't think there's any DRM servers or other nonsense.

Stuff like this is why software gets cracked ans pirated. My friend paid seventy five dollars for a Mixcraft Pro license but because he was still on crappy DSL it couldnt call home to verify and thus wouldn't work. Someone very close to me allegedly found a cracked version , installed it and is using it to this day. It just works.

Is DSL still a thing? I thought all the twisted pair was gone by now.

He lives waaay out in the country and they had to run a line special just to his house. The cable provider won't run a line there for just one customer so it's all he's got

I might have to do that, thanks. And I would absolutely buy it. The license server stuff doesn't work in the real world.

Something is happening and I don't know why. I have a song that I try to bring up in Abelton 10, which I paid for and is the only version I think I've ever had. I am told I have too many "Session Views". Then it says I am not authorized.
It won't let me export or save changes.
I guess version 11 has more session views? But if I can't get to that number how did this song ever get that? And WTF is a session view?
I am not going to pay them another $350 to maybe fix this. I should give up and try a different DAW if it can import stuff from Ableton.

They claim that they support musicians but in reality they drive away anyone with talent and creativity. The DRM stuff is designed to kill us inside and turn us all into grey lumps of pudding

Copyright attorney Leonard French tells how there are some people who buy the game in order to legitimately pay for it, and encourage the developers to make more games, then simply put that copy away and play a cracked version, because the experience is better.

I hate Ableton so much. It is the least intuitive program I have ever used.
I remember Ben talking about "Tomcat," that web server from years ago. What he said, regarding its terrible documentation was something like, "They know what you want to do with it, but refuse to tell you how." And that is Ableton.
I have two giant problems with it right now. Two of my songs have a random increase of volume at 11 seconds. And the INTUITIVE way you'd think you'd make a track longer doesn't do anything.
I hate it so so much. But I bought a copy and I bought my friend on guitar a copy, and it's expensive, so I am letting myself get frustrated with it like this. I know that even if I knew everything about it I would not be as productive as I'd like: I know how to do everything in Hugo, and I am at 10+ years working on the same game - but still, it's frustrating to have an excuse like this.

Jonsey, what exactly are you trying to do? Since you don't mention it, for single- or multi-track audio editing there is one program that is probably the finest piece of software out there to do that, a best-in-breed, world-class application for audio composition and audio effects. Since you didn't mention it, maybe you just didn't know about it. It's called Audacity. Its interface is intuitive, and if there's something you want to do with sound and can't figure out how, you just haven't found a plug-in for it. Their website is
here, you can download and try the software, and if you want to keep it, pay the low, low, price of $0. That's right, Audacity is a free, open source audio editing tool. No, wait, Aidacity is
the audio editing tool to which all others are compared, and as an extra benefit, it just happens to be free and open source.

Lemme send you this - your data goes to Russia now because the people running the Audacity project are horrible:
I am using Ableton as it's a Digital Audio Workstation. I don't think Audacity has many of the necessary tools to make and export multi-track songs. I could certainly be wrong.

Audacity supports stereo and multi-track. If you don't like where its going like misuse of data, use an older edition. But, asx far as I know, Audacity does not use an internet connection. I'm not sure, but it might not even do on-line version checking. Cartaimly there is nothing it does that requires an internet connection.

Yeah, before the Soviets ruined it, version 1.2 or something was everyone's go to version. I have whatever the version is before the project got ruined. DATA COLLECTION!! /invades Ukraine Data collect how to build a 19th century tank first, fellas.

Try again, Jonsey. The Soviet System ended in 1991. At most it might be Russian. but let's not equate people or groups in Russia from the Russian Government. We had this situation when people blamed returning Vietnam veterans for the US Government's prosecution of the military conflict.
Since you have a reaasonable version that doesn't phone home, use it. Or, it is an open source application, if it bothers you, look throgh the code that handles telematics, dike it out, and recompile it as a fork. Aidacity has no reason to connect to the internet, so if any such code is present, disable it, then the issue is removed. Yeah, that's a drastic step, but bold problems require bold solutions.

I'm basically saying if he's not happy with the situation, since Audacity is free and open source, he can always use an older edition if he doesn't like the cuurent one, and since all of the actual instructions - the source code - is available, it is possible, although a difficult, to identify the places in that code where it uses the Internet to report information about the user, to disable those parts of the program, then rebuild it without those pieces, then redistribute it as an identified altermative version, a "fork" of the original program.
I am, of course, underplaying the amount of effort it would take to do that, and, absent some serious issue justifying the work involved, which could be several weeks or months. Jonsey doesn't have the time to do that, of course, all he wants is a program to handle multitrack music editing. My suggestion is like, you want a car with the features, comfort, and speed of a Norada (a fictional brand), but without it collecting personal information, and my response is, just go get a norada, its free and so are the reference manuals, disassemble it, remove the offending parts, then put it back together. It would be wildly impractical for someone to go to that much trouble.

I don't think "fork" was the term she had questions about.
