ICJ presents... Bad_Opinion

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

In this thread, I will offer up my opinion on each and every film requested. If I haven't seen it, I will note that and I will give you my impressions of it based on its rep.

It's my intent that this single thread will create more strife, anger, disagreements, flamewars, hurt feelings, requests for suicide than any other thread in the whole history of Jolt Country BBS.

I will be completely honest, and I trust that all of this will not disappoint.

Haven't seen it yet. Expect to see it on Friday.

UNINFORMED REACTION:Somehow, even though Edward Furlong and Linda Hamilton haven't worked in years, they still couldn't get a hold of these two for T3? Give me a goddamn break. That's horrible. I have heard that this movie does justice to the "franchise" that is T2 and... er... T. We'll see. I really couldn't care less if it does or does not as I have no real strong feelings towards either of the first two films, but still it would be nice if it T3 fit in well. But yeah, I'll mainly be going for the popcorn and air conditioning.

Gremlins II?

I honestly can not remember a single thing about Gremlins II, except for the bit where Hulk Hogan yells at G2's equivalent of Stripe happened in that one.

So instead, let's talk about the Gremlins video games. Why were they so universally bad on the PC? Well, some of it was due to the era that they were created in. I would maintain that one had to be a very, very talented graphic artist to get things looking nice on an EGA (16 color) display. There were no colors from the available palette that looked anything like a skin tone that anyone on this planet has ever or will ever have -- the four green colors, in fact, were all a bit off if you wanted to animate the Hulk, even. So it looked cell-shaded well before cell-shading got to be popular.

The gameplay was kind of weird as well. The movies (well, the first one) had kind of a comic tension-thingie going on all the time. The game just had Zach dorking about from hall to hall with a gun or something. Plus, I think that there are very few things that aren't made better without a li'l bit of Phoebe, if you follow me here.

So it's too bad. And the worst part is, I have no idea how one would go and make a good Gremlins game either. 15 years of retrospection and I am coming up blank.

What do you guys think?

It's hard to say. Definitely, it should be a bit silly. Maybe add several new characters. No idea on how to make the gameplay interesting, though.

What is your review of the movie "the Rocketeer"?

I didn't like it when I first saw it.

Was that Billy Zane's superhero movie? Or was he the Phantom? The "I," "M," "D," and "B" keys on my keyboard are currently broken so I can't check myself. Billy Zane is almost instantly annoying, but he was great in that Tales from the Crypt movie which is on USA network every weekend.

It was actually Bill Campbell. I mainly asked just to see if you would distract us with a review of Cinemaware's "Rocket Ranger," which I never got around to playing.

Then, in my master plan, I was going to ask about the movie "THEM."

The Gremlins game for the Atari 5200 (and modified to work on the Atari 8bit computers) was pretty good.

You controlled the human, who had to pick up a certain number of mogwai randomly scattered around the screen, and deposit them - one at a time - into a holding pen in one corner. There would also be bits of food scattered around, which you had to pick up. If a mogwai ate the food, he'd turn into a gremlin. Meanwhile, the gremlins would run around and open the fridge and toss food around, as well as generally try and Bite Your Ass. You had a sword, so you cut kill them that way. There was also a TV that you could turn on, which would distract the gremlins.

Each level would have more mogwai, more gremlins, and more food. Your points would depend on overall speed as well as how many mogwai you were able to return safely.

I'm sure a little bit of web surfing will provide plenty of information on the game, and you should be able to play it on any number of emulators.

That being said... no one asked me, but Gremlins 2 sucked. I love Dick Miller - the cameo king of all time - but I'm not so sure that he can sustain a whole movie as a main character. Gremlins with wings was the nail in the coffin, though.

Personally, I had fun with Gremlins 2. The summers after it came out, they'd show practically every day on HBO, and it took me a long time to get sick of it. Even now, I wouldn't be surprised if I liked parts of it. Plus, there's that Faith No More song in it.

Perhaps he was the Ultimate Quote Machine's predecessor. The technology certainly seems less advanced.

Maybe someone is actually having their feelings provoked by a weak joke made by in a gimmick post and therefore must strike back and show how dumb the person who called them gay was. The only thing worse that being gay obviously is being stupid.

The Ultimate Quote Machine existed on the PWC BBS.

The Penultimate Quote Machine exists on this BBS and is not as good as the UQM. Where's the problem? There isn't one. Somebody needs to go back to the Dictionary.Com forums where they appreciate this kind of shit.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure. It was hilarious the first few times I saw it, which was when it came out. I have not seen it in a very, very long time. I get the impression that maybe some of the humor wouldn't hold up based on what I remember, but I look at it in the same way that I look at Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back: while the core of the movie may be very, very, very stupid, I can not deny that I laughed myself stupid while watching it. Therefore Pee Wee gets the Underdogs treatment from me: two thumbs up, way up!

I think it's worth watching again. It's slightly sad because Phil Hartman co-wrote it and has that little cameo in the end, and one can only imagine how much of the quality was due to his input. Personally, back when it was new, I liked it but it was somewhat of a guilty pleasure, but when I watch it these days, I appreciate it all the more.
