Breaking Bad's Walter White: why is he a sympathetic character

This was inspired by a WatchMojo.com video.

It is clearly obvious that (by the end of the series that) Breaking Bad's Walter white is a monster. He has directly killed people, hired people to kill people, and gave at least one other person the means to kill someone in a suicide bombing. He and his crew robbed a train. He engaged in money laundering. And, because he is a major manufacturer of crystal meth, he is, by definition, a Drug Kingpin. Yet, despite all of this, the audience still sees him as a sympathetic character right up through the final episode. So, I ask, is this a reflection on us, or is it a reflection of superb character development and excellent writing?

Its ok for him to kill people as long as he achieves his goals. Anything less makes him a slacker. I have no opinion on whether he's good or bad as that would be a judgement call
