Movies Nobody Dislikes.

I would have included Fargo here, but... well, whaddya gonna do.

I'm trying to think of movies that absolutely nobody could possibly dislike. I was going to mention Star Wars, but there's a generation of douchebags and women who take pride in suggesting they didn't enjoy it. I don't know how that's possible. But okay.

I can only think of two:

The Princess Bride and The Shawshank Redemption.

Is there anyone out there who genuinely dislikes either of these? Here, at least? Can I go on with my life knowing that at least there's nobody I can point to with shaking finger and say, that dude really does not like Princess Bride or Shawshank?

I'm not saying either is a great film (though I think they are). But they are so likeable, it's hard to fathom someone not liking them.

But hey, I've been wrong before, so LET ME HAVE IT.

Or add your own to this list. I can't think of-- I feel like Jaws is universally likeable, but I also feel it's one of the greatest movies of all time, so that's on a different level. And some people still probably don't like it.

I was going to suggest jaws or E.T. Both very likeable, in spite of Reece's pieces instead of M&Ms .

Raiders of the Lost Ark as another.

Raiders is an excellent, excellent choice, and will be added to the list.

I hated E.T. when it came out on my 11th birthday, and I hate it to this day, so that's out.

What's there to hate? Dungeons & Dragons? Speak and Spell mods? Reece's pieces? Coor's and frog dissections?

I can understand hating Coors

Emotional pandering. I also don't like Stranger Things, because it tries to channel E.T.

It sucks.

The first two that come to mind are The Goonies and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I still think Ferris Bueller is pretty good, even though there are a few small parts that show their age. The Goonies... I don't think I've ever heard someone say they didn't at least like it, which gives it at least 50/50 odds around this place.

Goonies is a BIG yes!

It's better after watching the outtakes

why are these all Spielberg movies?

Because Spielberg is a professional movie maker. I've heard he had to take over a couple of projects George Lucas was doing and 'reign him in a little' because he wasn't keeping up with the schedule. Spielberg is one of the few people who has the chops in the business to be able to tell otherwise high-ego very talented people that they need to keep their eyes on the prize: delivering something the public is willing to pay for.

If only Lucas had had someone like spielberg to ride herd on him when he was making Episodes 1-3 of Star Wars they might have been decent instead of execrable crap.

Lucas was not as big a director when he made the first three parts of Star Wars, he had to follow directions from people who wanted to have properly made motion pictures with a coherent storyline that would make customers want to come back.

And that is why all movies made by professional movie makers are universally loved!

I don't care for The Princess Bride, no. It's okaaaaaay. Maybe that's the bit. I don't dislike it, but I don't care for it. It's just so smug.

Mandy whatshisname is also so much better than anything else going on in it that it has the Dark Knight effect, where who cares what is happening when he / Heath Ledger isn't on the screen.

So that's a "no" for me on The Princess Bride.

The Princess Bride - I'm with ICJ on this one.

The Shawshank Redemption - This is also a stinker. A man gets falsely accused of a crime that tore his life apart, gets shit on or has to eat shit and like it for 2 hours, and then his "reward" after outsmarting everyone is being a lonely drunk on a beach.

Billy is entitled to his opinion. I've got him down for a "no".

Is there anyone who doesn't like Raiders? I feel like Raiders is probably the only answer here.

How much of the performances do you even remember if you can't recall the fact that Andy Dufresne was neither drunk nor lonely at the end of the movie?

I read your post but 10 years of Tdarcos getting every single detail wrong in a movie has sort of given us all giant calluses to that sort of thing.
