Neverending mission? not really, i see and hear and experience all sorts of racial ignorance that I note and let go. In almost a decade that I've been with a woman of color, I have experienced first hand all sorts and levels of treating people as different and less, from outright discrimination to the almost constant ignorant or hateful comments I hear from other white people. A very small excerpt from just this week:

What this "trashy white guy" was showing was CONCERN FOR HIS FELLOW MAN and general curiousity. Maybe he wasn't the smartest guy around.. but how you cull "racist" out of that exchange I'll never understand.

No, Adam, i'm not saying that those comments are racist. I'm just saying there are examples all over the place of people not treating other people as the same and equal. All races are like 99.99% the same genetically but here we are in the 21st century and people are still divided over skin tone. I'm not against white people like us, I just strongly believe that we ought to be a little more accepting of people that look different than us and a little more understanding of the of the difficulties that have really been dealt to african americans more so than any other class of "immigrants" to this country.

It's true that only about half a century ago blacks couldn't vote in this country or even mix with whites in many states, only about a century and a half since you and I could own some black people ourselves, and only about five years since someone close to me has experienced outright racism in a job interview.

So yeah, racism does exist in this country and will continue to exist for centuries more as long as people don't change their attitudes. But again, i'm not talking about you guys.

believe me, i'm fucking glad to be white. I don't have to go into a job interview wondering whether my race will affect getting the job and I have gotten out of countless encounters with the law much more easily because of it. My feeling is that as someone who has benefited immensely from being white it's important that I speak up about the injustices that exist.
