Don't buy a new, new motorcycle. Anyone who ever learned to ride has dropped the bike at some point. So you already know the paint is going to be scratched and the mirrors and tank are going to be messed up. Get a good used bike to learn on, get the dropsies out, if you take my meaning.

Off the top of my head, I'd say Honda Rebel, either a 250 or 450 (if they make 'em anymore)

Or this 500cc Kawasaki Vulcan might be a better fit.

And that's the point I'm making - or trying to make - here. If you're new to riding a motorcycle you're going to be very hard on it and buying something either built to stand the abuse or so cheap it won't matter if you ruin it, is probably a better idea than spending more money on a good, but not ruggedly built model.

This is the reason you get a kid who's first driving a beater so he wears out an already busted-up vehicle rather than something valuabe. Once they learn to be better at driving then they can be upgraded to a decent-quality car.

And I think the same rule can apply to you and learning on a motorcycle.

Anyone who thinks I'm completely wrong is welcome to step in here and explain why so I, and others here can learn something.

New bikes lose their value as fast or faster than new cars. A $10k bike will be worth $8k the minute you drive it off the lot, and that's if you can sell it. Plus, as 'Vark suggested, it's possible as a first time rider that you might drop it, or knock it over, or lay it down.

The thing about used bikes is most people don't put tens of thousands of miles on their bikes each year. It's not uncommon to find bikes that have a few thousand miles each year on them. Lots of bike owners don't ride them during the winter or during the rain. Heck, lots of them just ride on the weekends.

My opinion of Harleys is that you're buying a lifestyle instead of a bike. They're inferior and underpowered bikes. Most of them have problems because they vibrate so much that they end up shaking things loose or off. The only selling point for Harleys is that their owners can wear all that Harley gear and walk around telling people they own a Harley. Every $2k Honda will outperform every $20k Harley.

I was never a fan of the V-twin engine until I got my Shadow. the Honda is much smoother than the Evo.

Harleys are overpriced and I feel the maintenance charges are seriously overblown, even for stupid stuff like oil changes. The boy's first dealer oil change on his Iron 883 was around $100.0
Note: you have to have a dealer do the oil changes or your warranty is void.
Actually I don't know how valid that statement is, it's just what my boy told me.

The only way to recoup an investment on a Harley is to keep it for fifty years until it becomes a 'classic'.
