System Shock

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

Every once in a while I try to get into the original System Shock. The graphics are always too low-res, and dealing with its peculiarities are always a pain in the ass.

This thread:

http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.p ... 211.0.html

is apparently the work of some people who got the game to "just run." I'm going to check that out this week, but I wanted to put the URL here in case anyone else wants to as well. Apparently they link the entire game, so you don't need the CD enhanced-version physical media.

Mister classic gaming is gonna shit on low res?

Honestly, it runs pretty fine in XP and it's much better than System Shock 2.

Kid, you only say that because you wouldn't know a great game if it bit you on the ass. That, and because you think taking the opposite position of whatever you overhear smart people saying makes you rebellious.

This is a great catch. I can't wait to play it again. I had the same problems you did trying to get it to run. Thanks for posting the link.

You're right, I wouldn't know much that is great because in my mind the word has gravity, it's not something to be artlessly lobbed for nerd cred on message boards where I'm trying to establish myself. You have no ability to holster the word "great" when you like something. Furthermore, it's not like I dissed SS2, for all you know I could think they're both great games and simply think SS1 the better of the two.

Also if you want to argue the case for System Shock 2, do it. Try to keep it ten thousand words or less Typey McTyper. However I'm sure you're more than happy to allude to it's greatness erstwhile repeating boring lines about me, because it's you who doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about.

Did you fall in love with this sentiment the first time you read Robb and Ben stating it, or did you fall in love with it more and more as you continued to repeat it as your own thought?

That's a valid point. So, what did you think of SS2?

After all, we wouldn't want you to have to read anything substantive.

Kid, I was playing computer games 15 years before you were born. I've worked professionally as a salaried game designer at a company that was purchased by Rockstar. In fact, I just deposited the check I got from my share of that deal. I personally know a couple of the guys who MADE System Shocks 1 and 2, as well as Bioshock. One of them is coming to a party I'm having later in the summer. I know more about computer games than you'll ever dream of knowing.

It's glaringly obvious from every message you post.

I originally played it very quickly and returned it. I thought the atmosphere was great, but ended up playing through it on easy. After replaying it later I came to think, it couldn't make up it's mind about what it wanted to be and took no strong gameplay stances, so essentially it was great atmosphere and not much else.

Where System Shock 1 had very strong gameplay elements which made it feel like a combination of FPS and RPG.

Saying you worked as a game designer really isn't terribly impressive. If time in the industry magically made you know what is right and wrong in gaming we'd be swimming in excellent games. Hard work and knowing the right people isn't insight.

Saying you're friends with people who made the game you're baring teeth over, in anticipation of an attack just makes you look unforgivably biased.

For most people this would make it not worth constantly repeating.

Just another example of how little you know. If you had even the slightest clue, you'd know that in commercial game production, the relationship between skill/talent of the developers and the quality of the final game is often rather minimal. If you don't like the quality of the games, blame the publishers, not the developers - for the same reason we get so many crappy movies while the good ones go unmade or never see wide release.

It's a lot more insight than you've got.

I liked the games before I knew them.

Looks like the torrent for the thing has no seeds, and the first download link is dead. I did manage to get it to start downloading with the link in the middle, though.

(I know it's a forum post, but man, in 2008 we suddenly live in a world where it became insanely difficult for people to just put a DOWNLOAD THE SHIT HERE!!! link up.)

I managed to get a copy if you need one.

Woah a developer telling me the problem is publishers. This isn't suspect at all.

Regardless of your weak piddling over my wording, the point still stands. It's idiotic to suggest that time in the industry magically grants you insight. You call System Shock 2 great not as a result of any qualitative analysis, but because you wish you had made it.

Those dour one liners sure make you look pussyhurt.

Thanks! It said it was downloading successfully when I left for work this morning, but yeah, if it failed I'll take you up on that.

I originally bought the CD version back in the day, and I know I have the manual around somewhere. I am going to make an honest attempt to play it properly, but I couldn't remember a single control for the game, except that waving the trackball around corresponds vaguely to the guy's point-of-view. So I have to go into that wretched box that all PC gamers have, the Instruction Manual Box. The only guarantee in that box is that whatever manual you need is at the bottom.
