I dunno. FPS?
I think HL2 ruined FPS games for me, and not because it was that great -- precisely the opposite. I thought, man, the technology has gotten so amazing, and yet... here we are running down hallways and shooting Naz-- ERRRR-- aliens again.
Every FPS is still Wolfenstein 3D. (Except for Far Cry, as stated earlier in this thread.)

Yeah, that's largely true. I play very few FPS games anymore - Bioshock and HL2 are the only ones, unless you count Team Fortress 2, which I guess you have to even though it's not exactly like the single-player ones.pinback wrote:Every FPS is still Wolfenstein 3D. The story and atmosphere in Bioshock were really what made it amazing for me. So immersive. It was like being a character in a great movie. Best FPSRPG game since System Shock 2.
For me what made HL2 good was not just the great graphics and pretty-good story, but the amazing physics and the Gravity Gun. That thing was so much fucking fun. I'd spend hours tossing shit around. The way you could shoot saw blades at people and cut them in half was amazing. The GG was the first really great innovation in FPS games in aeons.
And now they've done it again with Portal. I can't wait for the expansions/sequels to Portal. I especially can't wait until they integrate it into the next HL game. Now that will make for some design challenges!
BTW, there already is a way to hack HL so you can use the portal gun in it. And if you just want to play around with HL2's physics and gravity gun in "sandbox mode", download "Garry's Mod" from Steam.
"Garry's Mod is a physics sandbox. Unlike regular games there aren't any predefined aims or goals. We give you the tools and leave you to play.
You spawn objects and weld them together to create your own contraptions - whether that's a car, a rocket, a catapult or something that doesn't have a name yet - that's up to you.
If you're not too great at construction - don't worry! You can place a variety of characters in silly positions."

I did not care for the gravity gun, and had no fun playing around with it. Whaddya gonna do? I thought they used the gravity gun as an excuse to offer lots of repetitive puzzles.
Portal was very clever.

I just started Half-Life 2 and so far am not wowed by it. Running and shooting (as a fugitive) in a police state is not my cup of tea. Great graphics but storyline is too extreme for me. maybe because it COULD happen in our lifetime, except for the aliens, natch.

The puzzles in HL2 were rather shitty, and I am amazed that they still had you countering weights around in, apparently, the later sequels/episodes.pinback wrote:I did not care for the gravity gun, and had no fun playing around with it. But I will say that in, "We Don't Go to Ravenholm," getting the saw blades and hurling them with the gravity gun was one of the most amazingly awesome experiences of my gaming life. I would play a game that was nothing more than a creepy, Halloween-themed thing on rails (not like a rail shooter, but you know what I mean, linear) that let you hurl saw blades at fuckin' people. It really was that cool.

Re: Team Fortress 2
Maybe it's my lack of experience, but every time I play TF2, I invariably get turned into hamburger. People keep grinding me up like sausage.Ice Cream Jonsey wrote:So, which one of you mouthy motherfuckers wants to get shot in the face tonight during Team Fortress 2?
It got so bad I decided to take on the nick name "Paul R as in Really Not Very Good."

As I point out below, I got HL2/Ep1/Ep2/TF2 as a result of buying The Orange Box. I've played both HL2 and Ep1. (They're actually easier than the original Half Life. Now, that was a son-of-a-bitch to play, even on the easiest setting.) I've gotten most of HL2 Ep2 but I haven't been able to win the last puzzle yet (defeating the Striders using Magnusson's balls). (Yes, I'm intentionally being silly here.)pinback wrote:I did not care for the gravity gun, and had no fun playing around with it. Whaddya gonna do? I decided to go back and replay HL2 Ep2 over in order to win the Gnome puzzle. Anyone here been able to do that? No, I'll ask that in a separate message.
I was absolutely amazed by Garry's Mod, at ten bucks it was a real bargain. I've had quite a bit of fun playing around with some of the third-party maps that have been done.
The trailers for Portal are what convinced me to buy The Orange Box in the first place. Then I found it was even more amazing than the ad showed. Only thing was there are a couple of things in the trailer that aren't in the game. The collapsing ceiling with the spikes on it, and the flaming floor. The flames only occur in the end of the first part of the game, and are not present as a regular obstacle.pinback wrote:Portal was very clever.

I actually just purchased TF2 on its own. I never played the original Team Fortress, it just seemed like a lot of fun. I think the videos ("meet the heavy") came out juuuust before? I can't remember.
But then my friend Jason told me that Portal was out of this world. He has very good taste in things, so I got Portal. And I did like it!
Then I was gifted HL2:E1. (Or was it HL2:E2? I have them both. Now I can't remember which.)
So I ended up getting them all. Of course, just buying two of them was more money than if you pre-ordered it, but that's okay, at least it went to Valve.
