Pinback's Ten Best Movies

Post by pinback »

Well, I've mentioned the top ten several times today, so let's see if we can't flesh this bitch out and get 'er done.

I've mentioned four of them already:

Godfather I
Godfather II
Fight Club
Leaving Las Vegas

Not mentioned were these other obvious choices:

Magnolia (the greatest movie of all time)
2001: A Space Odyssey (the other one)
Apocalypse Now

So that's seven. Three of which were directed by Coppola. I feel I should only have one of the Godfathers in there. So I'll wipe out II, even though I occasionally think it's the better of the two.

So, six out of ten. What are the others?

An easy out would be to pick a bunch more Kubrick movies. Clockwork Orange would fit in nicely. But I won't.

I wouldn't object to any PTA movie joining the crowd. Punch Drunk and Boogie Nights I'd have a hard time kicking out. But no. Let's be a little more creative than that.

I could go all classic and put Casablanca in there, but that's just not who I am.

So what else.

Blade Runner used to be a fixture in my top ten, but then one day, all of a sudden, I stopped loving it so much. I still do, but I could do without ever seeing it again.

In the Ridley Scott vein, though, I'm tempted to choose Alien. Let's not rule that out. Alien.

Let me flip through my collection. Run Lola Run. Sure, I'd love to pick that, but no. Mulholland Drive? Again, close. No cigar.

Monster. Monster, I'm tempted to pick, only because it's the one movie that I am afraid to watch for what it does to me. It is the most emotionally destructive movie I have ever seen. I love it dearly, but I don't know if I can ever watch it again. That's no pick for a top ten.

I have to put a Coen Bros. movie in there, but how to pick which one? My go-to favorite is Barton Fink. Perhaps I'll pick that, just to get the ball rolling. Okay, Barton Fink. But I know that's not really one of the ten best of all time, so I can't even do that.

So we're still stuck at six, basically.

The six greatest movies of all time.

Wait here, I have to go back and see what else I own.

...

OMG, how could I forget these. Jaws. Jaws, definitely. That's seven.

Oh oh oh, and Taxi Driver. I wasn't ready to put this top ten until the last time I watched it (a couple weeks ago), and I actually had to stop watching it because it was making me so sick. That's a winner, there.

So that's eight.

I can't think of or find any others.

So that's it. Here are my ten/eight best movies of all time:

- Magnolia
- 2001
- Fight Club
- Godfather
- Apocalypse Now
- Taxi Driver
- Jaws
- Leaving Las Vegas

I haven't seen very many of those. I guess I will.

I had a thread a long time ago with my favorite movies, but I don't think it's very accurate since subscribing to Netflix.

That might be the stupidist list ever. Are you sure it wasn't "shittiest movies ever"? Do us a favor and go drown in a pool or something.

It's like getting a "best books ever" list from Britney Spears.

Yes, Jeff, that was the 'stupidest list ever'. Did you even try on this post? Most of those movies are pretty good in one way or the other, it didn't include anything with 'Bernie' in the title, 'Rob Schneider' in the credits or 'an apocalyptic future' as the setting, but it was, undoubtedly, the STUPIDEST LIST EVARRRR. You make so many points in your post and none of it's personal, how could I not side with you?

I think that the Godfather part II is brilliant, but it won't really make sense unless you watch part I first. THat said, JAWS? 2001? What the fuck are you on? I mean Fight Club,MMagnolia--okay fine, those are good choices, and Taxy Driver. And about hte GOdfather thing, y'know, whatever. But the rest?

Until Magnolia came along, 2001 was far and away the greatest movie ever made. Anybody with half a brain knows this.

Jaws is brilliant in too many ways to list here. The JC server would run out of memory, and then everyone would blame me for causing the server to leave forever.

If only they had used real sharks....Well, they did the best they could, right? Not too many great whites look good on film. It adds five pounds, ya know.
Actually, it was a great movie. Anyone see the outtakes on the DVD?

Jaws was a good movie, if you had read the book first. Because the movie addressed many of the subtleties the book addressed, but...subltly. They were there, but you might have had to read the book first to get them. Still, a great movie.

I can't spell the various permutations of subtle, so bear with that.

I have never made it through 2001 without falling asleep before the end (and I am usually a big scifi fan). Kubrick really <s>has</s>had a talent for making things long and drawn out.

I'd like Ben (Iron Chef: Internet!) to tackle Aardvark's question also.

That's not Cooberick, that's Arthur C. Clarke. Cooberick's genius was cutting Clarke's ridiculous pontifications on life ,the universe and everything into something actually half-worth watching.

Fight Club? Magnoila? LEAVING LAS FUCKING VEGAS??????

Garbage. Utter garbage.

2001, Jaws, Barton Fink, Monster, Blade Runner, etc, have no place on any top ten list.

Note that there isn't a single non-American movie on the list, either.

A stupid list made by a moron who knows nothing about movies.

What's next, a Zagat's fine dining column by Ray Kroc?

Blade Runner is on everyone's list as the best sci-fi movie of all time. I don't know why you think that because you can't handle its lack of tits and explosions that it's somehow a bad movie.

We're talking the no-voice-over version, by the by.

It's a masterpiece. And although I have never seen 2001 (I did see 2010, though, which goes a long way towards not seeing 2001) it's, again, on many top-10 lists.

Magnolia, though I did not enjoy it, offered an hour's worth of character tension, the likes of which I have never seen in any other movie. For all its failings, there is no denying that it offers a unique experience to the viewer. It's like the first movie that featured actors in blackface... you're not sure if you like it, but there's no denying that it's something different.

Speaking of faggy flower-related movies, I thought American Beauty was pretty good. But again I'd like to reiterate, I don't know shit about shit. I'm just trying to contribute and not derail a thread with aimless bitching.

I don't need you people to defend me. Why he's having such a violent reaction to me just posting a list of my favorite movies is beyond me.
