2005: The Greatest Year in Music History.

Everyone knows that the only bands currently worth listening to are Audioslave, Tool, and System of a Down. That's not even up for debate. But, did you know: All three bands will be releasing new albums in the first half of 2005?!?

This is so exciting I could almost pee all over my grandparents while they're asleep!

2005 is shaping up to truly be the greatest year in music history since the release of the Necrotic Drift soundtrack.

I'm personally looking forward to the new release by Strapping Young Lad in March and their concert appearance in Rochester in April.

Again, back in 1993 we got SHITS DONE. Now, every crappy band has been in a studio and they have a professional-sounding demo tape even if their songs are shitty. I was ahead of my time.

I also wanted it more than anyone else; it just wasn't enough. My passion and fire were without doubt. Let me give you a for instance. Once and only once we managed to use a quality reel-to-reel setup. At Syracuse they had a room that students could use to record in a somewhat professional manner, and Kurt had access to it.

Well, some asshole locked it after hours. I had to hold my good ear up to the combination lock and CRACK THE FRIGGING SAFE to get in. Jesus and Mary. But the point is, nothing could stop me.

Now, of course, I have done so much research on musical genre that the thought of getting into a band that simply made good music would be alien to all involved. Any good band has one guy writing and directing and three other guys that do what the main guy says.

Sure, but that doesn't mean that I've lost my ear for good music, and I'm not hearing anything new that I like. Of course, I don't go out of my way to find new music.....

We live in a society where how an artist looks is more important than how they sound. For every talentless hack like Britney Spears, the Simpson sisters, and Hillary Duff, there are THOUSANDS of people out there with great voices who'll never be heard because they aren't photogenic. It's bullshit.

That's one thing that always killed me about the NFL. Each offensive tackle can run a 40 yard dash in under 5.5 seconds. You may be the best pass-blocker on the face of the earth, but you're not getting drafted unless your 40 time is around ten yards a second. When the hell are offensive lineman running that fast for that long? Never?

If I were starting up an NFL franchise I'd select at least a couple guys who run it in like 8 seconds but are otherwise technically sound.

My barometer for music is what's being put in front of me....what's on the radio and on TV. And yes, I think it all sucks. Fact of the matter is that I think just about everything that's mass-marketed sucks (be it Wal-Mart, or McDonalds, or Home Depot, or whatnot), and 99% of the time I go way out of my way to find better (IMHO) alternatives.

I don't have the time or to spend what little free time I have trying to find a few new songs that I might like....there are tons of older songs that I like, so I just listen to them. In regards to music, I think this happens to everybody at some point....when you no longer have the free time to find new music, you just keep listening to the stuff you liked when you DID have the time. Looks like I'm at that point.

If you music afficionados care to save me the trouble and put forth some new bands/songs that you think are good, I'll see if I can scare up a copy on Limewire and give it a listen. And if I find something I like, I'll say so. Fair enough?

Absolutely. I also find it interesting that Ashlee believes the boos are because she was rooting for the non-home team, not because she sounds like a llama caught in a bear trap.

Nobody has the time to research anything, that's why, like you said, you get some recommendations before you debunk the 99% of the music you're not hearing. I usually download 3 songs per unknown band from usenet in my favorite groups and spend about an hour a week listening to them. Sometimes people on a mailing list will review an album, but, otherwise, it passes by. I spend hours a week reading, but I know NOTHING about books. I don't know who's new, popular, wouldn't want to know who's new or popular, so usually I pick things off the shelves unheard of. Sometimes there's an occasional Fark comments link about what people are reading, a decent starting point. I do not have time to research brands-I buy what's cheap. I do not have time to get to know every cat in the animal shelter, I take home the one that seems to want it the most.

BTW- I found this site yesterday, and although it's not complete if you're gonne be a real pedant about it like I am, for you, it might be worth a try: http://www.music-map.com/ Type in a band you like, look at it's results. Post results, laugh at everybody's else's results.
