Arctic Adventure

Post by Flack »

Arctic Adventure is a text adventure that was written in 1981 for the TRS-80 and was lost to time for 40 years until the author rediscovered it, updated it, and uploaded it to this site where you can play it online in your browser.

You can read more about the author's history with the game on the website and the story is quite interesting. I've discovered a few bugs in the game and referred them back to the author, who is actively fixing them as people try the game out. The author was inspired by Scott Adams' adventures and the game is similar to those types of adventures. You will find many lethal situations, although the game does support saving so you might want to do that often.

Now if someone could help me figure out how to kill the angry octopus, that would be great.

Well, I can't figure out how to weigh myself down, but I assume you've tried the harpoon gun or the flare gun?

Ok, I found the weighted boots. The thing you might be missing is, have you tried "GO FLOE"?

(I haven't tried the harpoon yet because I keep on breaking the floe, ha)

I have crossed the floe, but I have not found the harpoon gun yet.

Yes. I have the brick, but haven't been able to figure out how to open it. I tried opening it, breaking it, throwing it, hitting it, stomping it, etc. I was kind of looking for a fire source so I could melt it. I assume sometime is inside the brick that I need.

Oh, well, once you go on the floe and it floats to another location, going east takes you to that place with the casino, and going east from there takes you to a village with three buildings. Be sure to enter them all.

Ok, I beat it. I had made it to the casino, but for some reason missed the next location and simply returned to the floe.

I did not need the item that was hidden inside the brick.

That's funny. It's probably easier to do it without the object in the brick (it's a key) since it involves less floe trips (and accidentally going on the floe with too many times killed me several times), but I still made myself do it that way because I really wanted the harpoon gun before even seeing the octopus, ha.

I can't imagine playing the game is more fun than reading this thread. I'm imagining a glistening wonderland full of ice floes, octopi, and glitzy casinos! Best game ever!
I don't have to say anything. I'm a doctor, too.

Yeah, reading this thread is probably better. Just the same, it's a cute little game that didn't have a ton of mazy, unnecessary rooms. That automatically makes it better than many of its brethren of that era, in my opinion.
