Flattening the Curve

Post by Casual Observer »

This will probably sound like a TDarcos post but I can't help it. Every single million time per day that I hear about "Flattening the curve" my mind thinks of the old Dukes of Hazzard theme song by Waylon Jennings. What's autistic about me is every time I say to myself, "it's not flattening the curve, it's straightening the curve and flattening the hills" as the other way usually doesn't make much sense.

How many times did you yank it to Catherine Bach, be honest.

"Flatten the curve" is easier to understand than "reduce the amplitude" which is what is intended. Consider the following:
Image
The dotted line is the capacity of the health care system. The red line is when not enough is done, the amplitude of the curve spikes and the health care system is just overloaded.

If we take precautions to reduce exposure, the amplitude of the demand curve drops until it is at or below the capacity of the health care delivery system, which is the black line. "Flatten the curve" is a sexier term than "reduce the amplitude."

As I never watched Dukes of Hazard the honest answer is zero. By watched I mean "saw for more than two minutes." I've probably caught some of the crazy "jump distances Evel Knevel couldn't make in a rocket sled" scenes allegedly using a stock Dodge Charger, or whatever car the General Lee was. Watching that show does to you what Billy Madison does to audiences: Make them measurably stupider.

Ahh, that's the new Trump Re-Election slogan:

I don't really understand all this "flatten the curve" business. Commander, can you please pull out some quotes from a book you've written or possibly some unrelated song lyrics to further your point?
