Sports radio

Post by AArdvark »

Tried to listen to your Buffalo Bills opening game on teh radio. The ratio of action vs commercials was so staggeringly one sided I Hadda turn it off and listen instead to podcasts. Is the NFL greed killing the game?
Note: when I listen to the Red Wings baseball there's a direct feed to the play-by-play announcer on TuneIn Radio. When the inning is over there's simply an open mic without anyone talking.
Can football be this way?

This isn't about a sports program but I know what you're talking about. One time I was (trying to continue) watching a movie on a superstation, was probably WWOR out of Seacaucus, New Jersey (actually "WWOR EMI Service" the satellite version), and they'd run maybe 5 minutes of the film followed by 10 minutes of commercials. Not really quite that bad, but you get the idea, the interruptions were so frequent I'd forget what the story was.

It made me think of an announcer saying, "We'll be back with more great commercials after these brief scenes from our movie."

Yeah, I gotta have something going when the Saints are on. There is just so... much... dead time. And the commish loves it, thinks it's great, NFL couldn't be better. THE SHIELD!!!!

They are headed to the same paradox of sports radio between 5 and 6. Hey, everyone's on the road! Let's run all our commercials then! Meanwhile, if I am on the road from 5 to 6 I just put it over to the USB drive because I don't want wall to wall commercials.

I don't want to say never because it will probably happen again, but with all the dead time I can't imagine going to an NFL game in person these days. I went to one a couple years ago in New Orleans with my wife and THANK GOD it was her. We ended up talking to each other for four hours, occasionally getting up to watch an exciting play. So I mean, it was great because the Saints were there and so was she, but that was a lot of dead time.

Yeah I know what you mean ICJ. I went to a Carolina Panthers game in Charlotte over 10 years ago (Tshimanga "Tim" Biakabutuka was playing for the team then) and after being there a while I was like "Wait.. why are they just standing around now? There wasn't a timeout or anything.." Then it dawns on me that if I was watching TV.. this is where the commercials would be!

Jonsey, here you'd be in the minority. My understanding is the demand for Washington Redskins tickets is so high there is a waiting list. The usual wait time for an opening for someone on the waiting list to get tickets is twenty years.

Season seats, you mean?

I guess there will always be super die hard fans that will endure astronomical prices and endless commercials to enjoy their sports games. I ain't one of them. Never been to an NFL game, prolly aint gonna. I heard there's 18 dollar beers at Redskins stadium. Yikes!

18$ Budweiser?! And I thought I was raging at 8$ Budweiser 5 years ago at Busch Gardens.. which is right beside the brewery.

I use the iHeartRadio app to listen to sports broadcasts. If I want to listen to a Chicago Bears game, I search for the Chicago sports radio station and then stream it for free on that app. The local flavor is almost always better than the official feed.
