Atari VCS Ships

Post by Flack »

The brand new $300 Atari VCS has begun shipping. One of the first people to receive one made a video and put it on YouTube. Ouch.

"But it has like a hundred Atari games that come with Atari Vault! Great value!"

lol: https://store.steampowered.com/app/400020

And then there's this:

"ATARI TOKEN
SO MUCH MORE THAN VIDEOGAMES!

Our tokens can also be used to play games in Atari Casino. Beside standard games like Roulette, Poker and Blackjack, we are working on innovative gambling games where your skill increases your chance of winning."

Was this thing made by the mafia?

Right I mean.. aside from that cool 2600 style joystick, I am just not seeing 300$ here.

This guy does a good, neutral review.

I am not seeing $300 here but I will get it anyway. IF YOU CAN BUY IT, Christ it's May and you still can't get one.

Sadly, I see this being the wave of the future for the rest of our lives. Console launches where a year later you still can't walk into a store and get one.

$300 for the same Atari games we all already have on Mame? Huh, well I don't think my discretionary funds will be going towards this. I mean, it's just a gamepad, it doesn't even have a cool retro look. You could put it on a coffee table and nobody would blink twice at it, it just looks like a PS4 controller.

At least the mini NES and the C64 mini LOOKED like sonething.

Hell, the PlayStation Classic mini kicks this things ass in my opinion and it was only 40$ at Walmart a while back.

It's actually a console. The picture above of a guy holding a controller is just a picture of a guy holding the controller.

On their website, Atari says that the new VCS plays 100s of Atari games, plus streams games from Antstream and comes with Chrome built in. Which... makes it a PC? I believe all the Atari games it plays are included in Atari Vault, which is available for $9.99 on Steam. This is a case of someone cashing in on nostalgia and little more. The thing is stuck in pre-order hell because Atari is making a million times more off of selling NFTs than they will ever make off this thing. Once Windows 10 stops supporting this thing you'll be able to buy them for $50 or less at a garage sale. The pre-order price is still $399, which is about $100 more than a refurbished PS4 costs on eBay. What a joke.
