That's why I bought a Blu-Ray drive, (I actually bought it; I haven't installed it yet) because I can back up 25 gigs at a time on a single disk. I figure I was right, if I'm going to see files like this I'm going to need very large disks instead of just large ones like 4GB DVD.

I also bought an external drive converter for only $14. More news in a separate article.

Is there some kind of compression codec thingie that can reduce the file size without compromising the HD quality?

Just last week I was converting a couple of Hi-8 video tapes to digital and I found the file size to be excessive. Nothing like 3 gigs, but more than I was comfortable with. I think they were stored as uncompressed AVI. Then I figured out the software to bring the sizes down quite a bit.

I did a video in high definition. Not long, runs about 3 minutes. Typical video size I've had ran like 70 meg for 2 minutes. But I looked at the video file. This is from the directory:

Yeah, a 3 minute hi-def video is a whopping three gigabytes! I can hardly believe it. And I wondered if buying a two terabyte drive was a little much when I was deciding whether to go with one or two, and that maybe I could have lived with a one. I am now glad I went with the biggest drive I could buy. (Or, at least, at a reasonable price; above 2 and the price really goes up.)
