I read the book before I saw this movie, before I knew it was a movie. Alan Dean Foster was one of my favorite authors in my high school years. They used to hire him to write book versions of movies if the screenwriters didnt have the time (Star Wars)

I remember catching the movie on late night tv and thinking it was sort of familiar. I did laugh at the beachball alien
